Uthragan Empires and Puzzles HotM October 23

Uthragan Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Uthragan is Empires and Puzzles’ October 2023 Hero of the Month (HotM) and he was a lot of fun to test in Beta. But “fun” doesn’t necessarily equate to “good”.

No chin wagging today, let’s jump straight in.

…Although, you could help me by sharing a link to this post. Cheers!

Faster Than The Speed Of Light: Uthragan (Empires and Puzzles)

When I first saw Uthragan I was excited to test him out. It’s not the hit; it’s the Poison damage and healing combo that will grant him everlasting life.

I’ve always wanted that!

for the price of 6.5 tiles. Surely it’s not that easy?

But it very nearly is, and it’s marvellous to behold!

Uthragan is a healing machine. Exactly as advertised.

And when facing Last-Gen Heroes, he really can excel.

It’s true that he only hits one for 150%, but that’s just a quick slap to get their attention or to push them over the edge when they’re teetering.

It’s the 573 Poison damage that’s the real pain inflictor here. And fully Limit Broken, it goes up to 753 damage over 3 turns.

That’s a decent amount of DoT for a HotM. Viselus does 560 Poison damage over 4 turns and Balur does 252 Bleed damage over 3 turns (both Average).

To put that into perspective, a basic levelled Hurricane will inflict 916 Burn damage over 4 turns at Average (1268 fully Limit Broken).

When Uthragan drops his Poison the toxicity eats away at his victims like the guilt of scoffing too many chocolates when dieting.

You can almost see the anguish on their faces as their stomachs begin to turn and knot.

Putting the entire sequence together (Hit-Poison-Healing), you actually have a very durable Hero on your hands.

Uthragan Vs. Empires and Puzzles

Let’s get the table out, may as well.

OldCynic.com – Uthragan compared with similar Heroes

When I needed to know how many tiles Serandite required to charge, I used the Old Cynic Mana Guide.

Old Cynic’s Mana Guide; for when Very Fast just isn’t Fast enough.

Reflecting On The Table…

In all seriousness, I added Serandite because the Ninjas with their first charge, the Styx with their first charge, and Magic with their first charge, all come under the 6.5 tiles that represent, Very Fast.

So while not the focus here, they should be part of the conversation.

Back to the table and Uthragan looks good value for money. And, he’s a new Hero with some pretty beefy Power Stats when all done up (ATK1220/DEF950/HP2209).

Heroes like Kai and Serandite do stand out as better, while Malosi and C. Kageburado offer that strategic controlling element.

But Uthragan clearly outshines some others here.

It’s great to see Gravemaker, the old but highly regarded Hall of Famer. I’m reliably informed that you can still catch him on the 2023 Legends Tour (also known as the Local Leaderboard).

Is Uthragan Worth It? (Passives/Element Link/Aether Breakdown)

Uthragan has a couple of strong Passives:

  1. Resists Poison, and
  2. Resists Mana Generation Ailments

Both of them are handy, but neither is massively impactful.

It’s the Element Link that’s the most useful, the +10% mana generation for all Dark allies for 4 turns.

It actually represents the first time Uthragan does anything for anyone other than himself, but it’s not enough to bump his value.

I do like Uthragan’s Aether Power; +20% Defense for 6 turns. Because at his Speed, with his self-healing Special, he’s gonna be a pain to kill off.

Overall, Uthragan’s a solid unit with some decent extras. But what are his weaknesses?

Uthragan’s Weaknesses

Uthragan is exposed when facing super-elite Squads. That’s when you notice he’s punching above his weight.

Lots of the top Defenses are simply avoiding Ailments like my dog avoids the showerhead.

That’s when Uthragan can become a moot point.

There he is, twitchy as F%#k after slapping Guardian Hippo for the first time, got the rest of your team all hyped up on the hopes of a cheeky victory, but then Aramis steps in and that’s that.

Now Uthragan’s swaying back and forth, trying to reassure you that he’ll get ’em as soon as the embargo lifts.

But the battle quickly progresses and just like an immortal, he’s destined to live out the rest of his existence watching on as his companions wither and die.

Then he finds himself standing alone, waiting for the final conk to come swinging down, to smash open his dome…

…and to ultimately put him out of his misery.

Uthragan Empires and Puzzles – Hero of the Month October 23

My final thoughts:

The great thing about Uthragan is that once you fire off his Special you feel like you can leave him to fend for himself.

~Like having a child who you can finally trust with the stove; a great relief.

But like many before him, he’s a little selfish and won’t do anything that doesn’t directly benefit him.

And when your business is taking out super-squads, you either need to be a true monster, or you need to be a great communicator.

That said, an inadvertent strategy comes about from fielding Uthragan; hoping that he takes the hit.

See, Uthragan can and will soak up damage that would otherwise kill another member of the team.

To be clear, in Beta, my fully Limit Broken Uthragan was healing himself for 843 HP Per Turn! And he was weaker back then with only 501 Poison damage (vs. the 573 now).

For me, Uthragan is an energetic and fun Hero who could easily Stack and could be an irritation to the opposition.

If I pulled him I would conduct more testing (at 3/70) on account of his speed and self-healing. -Because there are lots of areas where he could really shine.

He also has modern Power Stats on his side.

However, this is not a one-button wonder and will most likely be a bench Hero for many rosters.

Hero Grade for Uthragan (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this Hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? No.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? Yes.

  1. Heyyyy. Great read again. sharing to my alliance as per usual.
Quite interesting hero this guy, but I do hope SG can at least make him slap a bit harder. 150% will either make them laugh or angered them and slapped back harder. Maybe he can be useful with other heroes that can increase DOT like Matilda or Narcisa to reset the DOT. Definitely cant do anything against the Gargoyles as they can straight up resist poison damage.

    Thanks for the review OC!

    1. Hey MIB, there were a few requests to increase the damage or hit in beta (as you may know), but he would have been too good with a decent hit imv! I’ve been reading some interesting synergies for him so look forward to seeing if any silly loops materialise.

Thanks for sharing, I always appreciate it!

  2. Just pulled him, going to level and pair with other dot heroes, fire, sand, poison, ice and will do 750+ damage per turn on my ailment attack team if they don’t have ailment protection or cleanse, it’s a fun to play offense.

  3. I’ve got quite the bench at this point, but anyone with decent stats that can fill a role in a pinch is perfect, and this guy fits the bill. I just pulled him, too… so I think he’ll be getting the tabards next.

Sorry, Arfanias and Turgruk…. you have to wait again.

  4. 0C,

I have 2 Alfrikes. I drew 3 Uthragans. I’m wondering what 1 or 2 of each of these aforementioned heroes on the same team would do. It could be interesting. Alfrike could be born again as a fast mana and we could hear that guitar power chord much more often!

Btw, your review on Aradia mentioned towards the end what danger two of her would cause. Welp. I have 3 fully ascended Aradia’s and when they all light up it’s essentially over. Teamed up with one or 2 of my Milenas, Alfrikes, a Hachiko, etc. they can be a nasty combo. Sometimes a cold board gets in the way, but Aradia is a beast alone or x 3 with that burn damage after the max HP hit. Meanwhile, Uthragan has Alfrike’s phone number and they are about to go steady. She’s into purple aloe plant Ultron cosplayers.

Thanks so much for your content! Always entertaining and informative.

    1. Hey Will, thanks for the support and congrats on the pulls. I like heroes with odd Specials cause there’s a chance you can get a weird loop out of them. I also like his EL for Alfrike. Still, I would stick to one and save the others for now. Lots of people will experiment further and could proved a use for a second. But unless you have a clear vision of something, like some untapped synergy loop potential, then I wouldn’t.

Plus, you have real top tier heroes otherwise available to you.

      Thanks!

  5. Hey OC,
I also enjoyed using it in beta and I got him today in the Atlantis summon.
He is just right for an ailment heavy team along with Amethyst, costume Gravemaker and Peridot.
I’m busy with others atm so it will be a little while before I can get around to him/her/it.
