Sorrow and Thunderclap Double Header Review (Empires and Puzzles)

Sorrow and Thunderclap Split Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Thunderclap and Sorrow; two words you never want your doctor to say. Both have now arrived at the illustrious Empires and Puzzles portal, and both are awesome.

Sorrow has taken a haircut from when I first saw her in Beta, which can only be a good thing because she was super OP back then.

I took my three free spins this morning, hoping for one of these two, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Things have been pretty barren ’round my ends, and I was beginning to lose hope.

Then…

💥Boom💥

Kai and Suzuna Bonus Draw - Empires and Puzzles Screenshot

I’m a Made Man! (No disrespect Mafiosa, just a turn of phrase).

I’m excited to have both, but I’ve prioritised Kai to level up first. I suspect after the Big Balance Update, I’ll be creating a new Raid Squad, and I’d like to see how he fits in as early as possible.

Alright, onto the main show; Sorrow and Thunderclap.

Note: These Heroes are both Monster Hunters but are from 2 different Families, so I’ve included their Family Bonus and Passive details within their individual reviews.

Sorrow – Empires and Puzzles

Sorrow Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Key Facts: Ice (Blue), Average, Sorcerer,

Abyss Hunter Family for 2/3/4/5 Heroes: +5%/+10%/+15%/+20% Defense.

Special Skills (Icebound Ritual): 1. Summons 2 Icebound Sickle Minions for the caster and nearby allies with 15% HP and 30% attack inherited from the caster. 2. When summoned, the Icebound Sickle Minion gives +45% attack for its owner for as long as the owner has Icebound Sickle Minions. The attack increases by 5% each turn, up to +60% (can’t be cleansed). 3. When the Icebound Sickle Minion is destroyed, it deals 135 damage to all enemies.

Passive Skills:
1. DAMAGE OVER TIME ON SPECIAL ~ When this character casts their Special Skill they give a Hunter’s Mark on a random enemy. The target receives 150 damage over 3 turns. If the target already has this effect, the duration will be refreshed and damage will be increased by 150 (up to 1500 damage in total).
2. HUNTER’S SENSE ~ When this character casts their Special Skill, they transfer the newest cleansable Status Ailment from themself to the target. If the Special Skill can not target an enemy, a random enemy is chosen instead. If this character has no Status Ailments, they recover 8% health.

Talent: DELAY ~ +15% chance to drop the mana generation of the enemy by -50% for 2 turns after dealing damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.

Aether Power: DEFENSE UP ~ +20% Defense for 6 turns.

Is Sorrow Worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

When Sorrow first appeared in Beta, she was absurd. Her Minions dealt 200% damage to all enemies when destroyed… crazy right?

Sorrow’s parents weren’t very subtle when naming her. I’m guessing they’re not the type of people who try to finesse things, like you or I might; they don’t ask to “use the loo”; instead, they explain exactly what they need to do there…

Sorrow's Face - Empires and Puzzles Screenshot

No shame in it tho, takes all sorts, after all.

Sorrow’s been tamed a bit since Beta, and instead of 200% per offed Minion, it’s now a fixed figure of 135.

So, looking at her Speed (Ave) and the number of Minions she squeezes out (6), you’d have to imagine she’ll do at least 810 damage to all enemies per battle.

Sorrow Breakdown, Empires & Puzzles

A few notes/what pops to mind with Sorrow:

  • Sorrow spawns x2 Minions at a time, meaning that if they survive until she fires again, you’ll lose 1 set on the basis that a Hero can only hold 3 Minions at any given time
  • The Minions only inherit 15% HP from the Caster, meaning they were born to die (they’re meant to be disposable)
  • These kamikaze Minions add a fantastic mechanism to the game that will really alter the way we deal with them
  • Bera and the Lunar Family’s (Xiaotu and Laohu) stock has just increased in value
  • Sorrow will be devastating in an Arrow Barrage War, where she’ll have the potential of delivering the death blow to her enemies

And imagine sticking her next to Ludwig…

Screenshot of Devana with Ludwig (Empires and Puzzles)

As someone with no solid Minion killers in his roster, I couldn’t experiment and consider all the variables when testing Sorrow. However, running her on offence and facing her on Defense was ridiculous.

She’s gonna bring a lot of inescapable pain to those without proper Minion muffling abilities.

Once the Minions are up, they’re gonna be running head first into every tile you throw their way, all the while ranting and moaning, G’ing themselves up for their big final moment.

And she’ll quickly create a loop of destruction next to Ludwig or another Hero who can speed her up.

The thing with Sorrow is that she’s so tricky to deal with:

  • You can’t choose how many Minions you’re gonna get rid of, say, from tile damage, so you can’t manage how much damage you’ll receive
  • And, the Minions act as pseudo-health when they’re alive or 135 damage when they’re dead

You’re damned if you do (kill the Minions); you’re damned if you don’t.

If only I had pulled a Lunar Hero for that Passive or found a Bera somewhere.

But if you happen to have a Hero like that, then I’m sure Sorrow is deffo overrated!

Otherwise, I think she’s a big problem.

Hero Grade for Sorrow (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? Yes.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? N/a.

Thunderclap – Empires and Puzzles

Thunderclap Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Key Facts: Holy (Yellow), Slow, Fighter

Jungle Hunter Family for 2/3/4/5 Heroes: +5%/+10%/+15%/+20% HP.

Special Skills (Warcry of the Jungle): 1. The caster gets Taunt which prevents enemies from using Special Skills on the caster’s allies for 5 turns. 2. The caster regenerates 1250 Boosted health over 5 turns (can exceed max HP). 3. Deals 500 to 1000 damage to all enemies after 5 turns, based on the damage the caster had taken while this effect was active (the maximum effect is achieved upon taking 50% of max health in damage). 4. Stack (Max 10): The caster gets +25% attack against the weaker element.

2. HUNTER’S VIGOR ~ When this character casts their Special Skill, they get +20% Attack for 3 turns. This effect can be active in addition to other effects that alter attack.

Talent: Revive ~ +30% chance to revive with 1 HP after a fatal attack. The revive is applied at the end of the turn.

Aether Power: TAUNT ~ for 4 turns.

Is Thunderclap Worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

Alright. I’ve been talking about Thunderclap for a while now, and I really wanted to pull him this morning.

That said, I don’t think he’s too overpowered (OP).

He’ll definitely be OP on Defense if you can’t manage him. But that is easy enough to do.

And on Offense, he’ll be a breeze to use.

Let me tell you a secret. I wanted to test a few things on Thunderclap but didn’t have him.

But then, in a moment of genius, I remembered that Beta was still on (Ceto’s a monster). Anyway, in Beta, the Covenant portal appeared this morning, so I used the free Beta Gems and got to pulling….

And I pulled Thunderclap! Happy days.

So I checked and confirmed:

  1. A Dispeller will dispel all of Thunderclap’s Buffs (besides the Stacked Atk Up), including the big 1000 hit
  2. If he fires his Special after already firing it, within the 5 Taunt period, everything resets besides the big 1000 hit. -That continues on its original trajectory

Thunderclap Breakdown, Empires & Puzzles

Thunderclap was a fun Hero to hang with in Beta. We sat together, counting down each turn before he lit up the board.

We’d giggle and nudge each other with every passing turn. Laughing at every missed opportunity to dispel him.

It’s sooo cool getting to that final payoff -the 1000 Clap.

I don’t think there’s much to cover with Thunderclap because he’s pretty straightforward.

It’s a solid Taunt period (5 turns, which is longer than Beta by 1 turn), some top-drawer boosted healing, and then it’s popcorn time, as everyone waits to see if the opposition is gonna let him land.

A Malosi type or Dispeller will quickly calm him down, though.

All-in-all, a crazy Hero if you don’t manage him. But he is so easily managed. -Mind you, a little synergy could change that!

…PS: Don’t let him slap you.

Sorrow & Thunderclap (Empires and Puzzles)

My final thoughts:

I like both of these Heroes. Thunderclap is fun, and I still make Sorrow OP.

That said, I look forward to facing her in the wild to see how she fares.

What are your thoughts on these two?

Thanks for reading, and take care!

  1. Thanks for the review, initially happy to get both. Not sure clap does enough beyond kara to justify giving darts to.

As for sorrow, I was disappointed trying her as tank, easy counters with gefjon lunar heroes, and any boost healers.

Thought you would have a comparison table with penolite, sobek and other avg speed AOE heroes to give perspective on her minions remove damage 810 to all.

Thought this was much less than the other 2 heroes mentioned but I did some tests and sobek does around 500, 50 sand.

Peno did around 400 for non minions heroes.

Happy that sorrow did better than I feared… Happy to be wrong. Thanks 💜💜💜

  2. I kinda liked them, but I only have three pulls and needing green, I will save the pulls for the next one. But congrats on your pull!

What a surprise, I thought in beta you were given all the heroes, because the idea is test them, isn’t?

    And who is Ceto?

    1. A new Jove type hero… lots of damage over 2 Mana speeds, Fast & Ave.
X damage to target and minor damage to all other enemies.

At the moment, with the rebalancing, there are loads of heroes in beta. But normally, it’s just the ones of the moment and your own roster. You face normal Defenses and these new heroes on Defense to try them out. Plus whatever you fancy. It’s just the small stuff you might miss, like how does this specific hero interact with that passive. But you might miss it anyway, cause no one’s really got the time to test everything in a game this big!

      Thanks for stopping by, Mig-El!

      1. Wait… then you have a really limited time to try the ton of heroes they launch? That explains why they need to nerf horoes so often. Of course nobody has the appropriate team, it is only a game after all.
Thanks for the additional info, my friend.

  3. Costume gormek can reduce Sorrows damage by 80hp/ per minion. The total hit will be reduce from 810 to 330. As u said the likes of Bera/ksavir is needed to prevent Sorrow from casting kamikaze minions.

    1. The only problem I have with 4 stars and 3 stars is that they’re not gonna stand up to a team of five elite 5 star heroes. I just don’t think the really good counters are that prevalent, but I could be wrong!

  4. My red rabbit will go against sorrow any day of the week! So glad I have her. Didn’t pullmsorrow but got thunderclap. Synergy w the purple witch maybe on defense? There’s so many heroes that I forget names now and can only use descriptors hahah

  5. After many months and completing 6 “Fated Summons” without a new season or event 5* hero I finally got one and that one is Sorrow.
My plan is to level her quickly and team her up with Tahir and Meadow as they all have the same passive, so they keep refreshing the damage over time up to 1500.
Not sure who else to add to that team but it will be fun finding out.
Thanks for the review and confirming my initial thought in that Sorrow was a great new addition to my team.

  6. Hey OC, Great to see the potential burden of regrading everyone after the upcoming balancing isn’t stopping your keeping going with your reviews and gradings. With LB and emblems I find it hard to assess a hero at 3:70 – your reviews really help making the decision on who to ascend, emblem and break.
If you had a anti-fire Titan team of Franz, Frida, cFinley, Quintin & Miki and then get both Bobo (to replace cFinley) & now Sorrow -is there role for her here as well in this Titan team

    1. Missed Porthos… of Bobo, Porthos and Sorrow – which of these gives the best improvement to the Titan team? Im confused and have limited supply of blades and scopes so need to invest wisely

      1. 😄 That’s a ridiculous Titan team! No, I can’t see that Sorrow’s gonna improve it. I do not think she can best the 130% of Miki and I don’t see where else you fit her in. No. For a player without such great Heroes, yes, Sorrow can hurt a Titan who will constantly hit away those Minions, but your team? I can’t see it.

That said, it should be noted that you are most likely getting wayyy higher Titan scores than me. My absolute best is +200k, so I won’t presume to tell you what’s what. I do enjoy raiding and that’s where I spend the majority of my time in E&P/Beta (raids/tourney/war). I only hit the Titan outta obligation, though, I always hit it!

Anyway, congrats on the awesome heroes and thanks for supporting my blog. I always appreciate it.

  7. Hello OC, once again you’re like this magical wizard of comedy combined with insight.
I recently pulled sorrow and Thunderclap ( I keep wanting to refer to him as Thundercat) a favorite cartoon as a kid lol. Anyway. I have my defense set and it’s going to be destroyed by the balance update shortly. I don’t ever get into the top 100 often. I think maybe 3 times total. Best I got to the 94th spot long enough to quickly screen shot it, go to bed to wake up and see I had dropped 250 cups overnight. It was a proud moment as I’m a nobody in an alliance that is nobody. I hate to double limit break another hero that isn’t synergistically matching up and I’m struggling with my defense. Let’s face it offensively we can all create a team but to stay on the top 100 defense that’s another story. I’m more than tired of the same copy cat teams on defense who put “#no spend”in their name yet they spent diamond’s to change their name and have 5 double LB maxed heroes. Ironic isn’t it? Once I lose Rhys, milena, brynhild, Cleo’s healing perks in the balance it’s going to take a tole. I have 12 main heroes getting nerfed in the balance some I have given my aethers to double LB. I take full responsibility for being the idiot who spent money so no point complaining about this rip off they are doing to us.

I wonder who you would pair sorrow up with? Another minion maker? Mr. Pengi? I have so many heroes and so little mats I need to carefully choose.

I have 2 Narcisa’s I was debating on Thunderclap tank, flanked with Narcisa’s if that even makes sense? Then who would I place on wings? I don’t have the cookie cutter heroes on everyone else’s defense but I have a good selection. I’m missing Aramis otherwise I have the exact team ranked #2 on board at the moment. (Ogima, hathor, Xandrella, cupido, Aramis) however I wouldn’t copy anyway.

I do have Anne, 2 queen Guowang’s, C Guinevere, both lunar heroes, milady, 2 hathor’s, 2 C ariel’s, 2 Archie’s, cupido, himeros, ekanite, Staintongue, Xandrella, ogima, chomper, peppermint, Malin, khonshu, 2 C tyr, R&N, Viselus, Hannah, 2 C Ares, 2 C Alasie, C perseus, 2 lord loki, the hatter, Kai, Dark lord, Doxan, Bera, freya, Dr moreau, ahmose, 2 C zimkitha’s, 2 C Master lepus, jasper, 2 phthonus, 2 Mr pengi, willow, anubis, erebus, 2 C Thor, Mica, morax, 2 liu bei, lu bu, C Aeron, kage, rumpelstiltskin, 2 C skadi, (Alkanen and azlars 3 costumes) onatel, zeline, fenrir, ratatoskr, 2 zenobia, 2 C killhare, ilmarinen, kravekrush, turgruk, lughaidh, exeera, salmon loki, bertila, seshat, vela, Devana, C Athena, Inari, alfrike, 2 celidana, 2 poseidon, 2 mitsuko, C jabberwock, silvaria, 4 Vivica, grazul, malosi, susuza, tarlak, gefjon, grimble, Kadilen, 2 magni, sif, C Aegir, obvious season 1 & 2 regular no costume heroes don’t seem relevant to mention. PLEASE keep in mind while this is a variety of choices I have most at 2/60 because I don’t spend on mats often. I usually buy the really good deals and get 10 pulls for 9.99 ( I’ll buy 5) and get 50 pulls usually landing a decent hero. I’m a nurse that has been playing since the hurricane destroyed my home last September and it’s helped me keep my sanity while staying in an R.V. all this time. I work and I sit here playing this addictive game.

Do you see any combination of synergy only defensively that jumps out at you? My double LB athers were used on milady, Anne, hathor and C Guinevere. I have enough aethers to LB one more at the moment.

    I’ll let you decide.

Thanks very kindly for your opinion and hard work!

    1. Thank you for the support, DaisyDukes. That’s a lot of info.

I’ll say what I see but I can’t take responsibility for where you use your mats! That’s on you 😁

Congrats on the heroes. Both are solid. TC is great on offense especially as dispellers on D are quite rare, at least in my experience.

I was saying on Twitter that Queen Guowang offers synergy with her slap for dispelling; that could line up nicely with Thunderclap, although I haven’t tested it.

Both are holy tho, so on D, if you decide to test, don’t make them neighbours.
Other options are Mana boosters (boost or generation), and counterattackers for when he’s in taunt.

Re. Sorrow, yes, Mr Pengi makes a lot of sense, especially as she creates x2 x3 a pop. I also like the idea of using a Lunar hero in D alongside Sorrow…. A bit mean, but your Sorrow can be an ass, while stopping their Bera from stopping her. 😁

Ok, I can’t go over every hero, it’s too much, but I hope my ramblings helped in some way. Thank you for being a Nurse, they are the best! Thanks again DDD!

      1. I saw another good Hero who makes all allies immune to Buff dispels for 4 turns;

        BELLADONNA
        Ave | Dark | Bard

        * Recovers 42% health for all
        * All allies gain 8% health for each Fiend owned by the allies
        * All allies get +54% attack for 4 turns
        * All allies are immune to Buff dispels for 4 turns

  8. I have Sorrow.
    She’s one of a kind.
Except if you have devana (doesn’t take any damages from minions and theirs specials), you’r screwed whatever you do if she fires off (makes mana control….well, as usefull at it is)(mana control>primordial gods>creation>dawa>all other specials).
The minions are not tanky, yet can be considered as a small overheal. They hit relatively hard. And when they explode, it’s a firework.
Pros : she’s great agains any hit all heroes.
Cons : Can be killed little by little by sniping left and right first.
She’s a nice diety 3 star for me, especially font one reason :
She’s the kid of hero you don’t really know how to deal with and what to do.
Shoot her ? Let her live ? you’ll be always doubting.
Add other “strange” heroes with her, and you can have a both great and deadly defense and offense team 🙂

    1. Hey Yardman, good to see you! Thanks for the feedback.

The problem I had in weighting Sorrow up was the reduction in damage from beta. As long as it was enough, she’d still cause the same problems.

Good to know about Devana… yet another reason to keep playing her!

      1. 🙂 Thanks for the answer friend.
I just used sorrow in “arrow” war.
        She rocks !
I think you should write a little sentence about that on the review :
Whenever she’s hurt by the arrow, at the end of the turn in the war, she deliver a full strong blow to all ennemies.
And believe me, it’s great to finish off some woundeds
