Adalinda and Hawthorn Double Header Review (Empires and Puzzles)

Adalinda Hawthorn Empires and Puzzles Hero Card Pin Image

Adalinda and Hawthorn both appeared in the Empires and Puzzles Covenant Summoning Portal. There’s not much else going on in the Portal… But, one of these heroes could easily be mistaken for a new 6-Star incarnation.

Sadly, with the Tower of Styx around the corner and working on that post, I haven’t had time to talk about these two.

And, as I’m about to put one straight onto my Ranking Page as a Deity: Tier-3, it’s worth writing a quick post.

In this post, I’m gonna cover both heroes; Adalinda first, then Hawthorn. Let’s get started.

Hawthorn Empires and Puzzles Special Skills

Monster Hunter (Plains Hunter) Family Bonus & Passive Skills

Adalinda and Hawthorn are both part of the Monster Plains Hunter Family, and they also both share the same Passive Skills.

The Plains Hunter Family benefit from an Attack boost bonus:

Plains Hunter Family Bonus (for 2/3/4/5 Heroes): +5%/+10%/+15%/+20% Attack.

The Plains Family heroes share the same 2 Passive Skills:

Passive Skills:
1. DAMAGE OVER TIME ON SPECIAL ~ When this character casts their Special Skill they give a Hunter’s Mark on a random enemy. The target receives 150 damage over 3 turns. If the target already has this effect, the duration will be refreshed and damage will be increased by 150 (up to 1500 damage in total).
2. SPECIAL SKILL DAMAGE REDUCTION ~ This character has a 10% chance to drop the direct damage received from Special Skills to 1.

Key Facts: Ice (Blue), Average, Padalin, Monster (Plains) Hunter Family

Special Skills (Hunting Charge): 1. Deals 395% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. Summons a Bone Trap Fiend for the target and nearby enemies. The Fiend damages the enemy with 45% Attack every turn. The damage increases by 8% each turn (up to 93% max). 3. The Bone Trap Fiend absorbs healing and disappears after absorbing equal to 35% of its owner’s max health. 4. The target and nearby enemies get -56% Defense for 4 turns.

Talent: PROTECT ~ +25% chance to get +25% defense for 2 turns after receiving and damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.

Is Adalinda Worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

I’m not gonna tell you anything you don’t already know: Adalinda represents the next stage in Hero evolution.

Near 400% to 3 targets on Average is devastating stuff, but it’s not unique as we’ve seen that level of damage (or equivalents) from Guan Yu and a few others.

What is ridiculous is to have that level of damage accompanied by a General Defense-Down to all 3 targets. -And, for that reduced Defense to amount to -56%.

We’re looking at a Costumed Finley (Fast) copy, only she doesn’t have the qualifying criteria of C. Finley. Adalinda will just hit 3 targets, period.

I suspect Adalinda will be a real player because once she slaps you, recovering from the 400% hit isn’t even gonna be your most pressing concern. It’s the -56% reduced Defense, which leaves your heroes behaving like cold butter resisting a warm knife. They are f#*ked. To put it politely.

And then, you gotta think about the bloody Fiends she just dropped on their heads.

Oh, and then the symbol that just appeared on your hero (which indicates her Passive damage has taken hold).

And yet still, she has a chance to reduce any come-backs (Special Skills Direct Damage) to 1 HP damage, with the second part of her Passive.

I’m not here to hype a Hero because I have no doubt that another will be along promptly to take her shine. But for now, she is a statistical menace.

Simple. Effective. Game ending. With Fiends on the side. (Good Fiends, at that)

For the record, there are no 6-Star Heroes in Empires and Puzzles. But you go tell Adalinda that.

Hero Grade for Adalinda (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? Yes.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? N/a.

Is Hawthorn Worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

The picture above provides us with a great example of why Hawthorn is a fantastic hero for Defense. (He’s great on Offense, but there’s a beauty to Defense, right?)

It’s getting to be that controlling enemy heroes is the only way to win a Raid. -You can’t afford to let these guys fire off unchecked and without constraint.

For his part, Hawthorn is a giant in the field of finding looping synergy.

What I found from my many tests was that if he fired off once, you’re in trouble. Because he would go off again and again.

Now, there is a caveat, which affects his Hero Grade, but we’ll get to that.

If things go his way, and he does fire off, he’ll Boost health, give a moderate amount of Mana for 4 turns, and the key part, reflect all Status Ailment back from whence they came.

In my tests, it was near impossible to kill him IF he was in elite company. Because my Malosi was busier than a security guard at a Pop concert, as he tried to fend off the likes of Kullervo, Bastet, and all the other troublemakers at the Show.

And, picking your poison between Kullervo and Hawthorn is no fun at all.

Also… he’s got a +35% chance to resist any negative Mana Status Effects as per his Cleric Class.

But here comes Hawthorns Achilles’-Heel! (sorry, wrong post.)

The key to subduing Hawthorn is found in controlling Status Effects. So yes, if you don’t play a Dispeller or a Malosi type, then Hawthorn might feel like hell on wheels.

But I’m telling you, C.Roc will wash away his BS like it were Sin in Holy Water.

Adalinda & Hawthorn (Empires and Puzzles)

My final thoughts:

Two great heroes in a (currently) poor Portal. Not much crazy in there, as far as I can see beyond these two monsters.

But monsters they are.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the wonderful Adalinda and Hawthorn.

  1. you’re being kept busy at the moment :-). I’d love to get one of those, but with my luck lately (twice tyrum, once bane and once the ever fantastic valen for the past events etc last month) it’ll probably be bloody salmon loki if he’s in the portal.
I remember a time when I got Joon and thought: now there’s a killer!
I still use him, but lately he’s feeling a little depressed and his sun is fading. he also stopped sitting under a tree meditating all monk-y and gained a little weight because all these new heroes are stealing his sunshine

    1. 😄 I love the idea of him gaining weight. It happens to us all! I’ve been busy of late, but these posts, the reviews, are fun. Thanks for reading Duende, hopefully you we get something decent here or with the Styx lot.

  2. Great review! I really enjoy your views on these heroes. I managed to snag Malin in the first covenant portal, wasn’t as lucky this time around.

  3. Rididulously strong heroes. But at 1.6% chance for one of the 6 featured, of which these are the only two new ones, math shows it will be around $750 for an “average” chance to actually pull one. Definitely not worth it.

    1. Hey byzanthia! Those are crazy numbers, but this portal needed a drawer and these 2 are it. It’s easy for me to forget about new heroes if they remain obscure, then next time I’m thinking of a DD hitter, I might not even consider Adalinda. So they needed mentioning, but you’re not wrong… these 2 are especially not for chasing.

  4. Great review, many thanks. Like others I would love to have either / both of these hero’s in my team but I am not spending money to chase them and be disappointed with the results.
Any idea when an event that allows you to use standard Epic Hero Tokens is coming? I have been saving mine for just such an event and have 33 burning a hole in my pocket!

    1. Hey Steve, I’m hoarding too. I’m guessing the Halloween Event? If so, that’s October 28th to November 10th (info from the 2019 outing) But I don’t really know. +a chance at some new heroes would be nice!

  5. I did a 17 pull today and was lucky enough to pull Hawthorn, Frida, Norns plus 5x 4 star including Brynhild and Mist who I didn’t have yet so I am happy as…….!!!
Now comes the pleasant frustration as who to level first 😀

  6. Omg content is entering faster than i can possibly keep up mentally..

Both theese new heroes look scary but not too monstrous..
I failed to pull any of them, but i got myself an Erebos now this morning on the first and only free pull… and that is gonna shake up the queue on whom to level first of the red… its crazy how fast the queue has expanded the past 6mnths.
