The Musketeers Empires and Puzzles

Musketeers Family Bonus & Passive Skills

Queen Anne, D’Artagnan and Aramis are all part of the Musketeer Family, and they share the same Passive Skill.

The Musketeer Family give protection to a random ally in the form of Cover:

Musketeer Family Bonus (for 1/2/3 Heroes): 50%/75%/100% chance to give Cover to a random ally for 6 3 turns when this character casts their Special Skill.

While in Cover, the ally takes no damage from Special Skill Attacks or normal Attacks. This character takes 90%/80%/70% 60%/50%/40% of the damage that would be received by the ally in Cover.

[This Family Bonus was buffed after this review. Details have been updated, however, the review remains the same]

This Musketeer Family Bonus works in tandem with their Passive Skill.

Musketeer Passive Skill:
1. DAMAGE ON SPECIAL SKILL AND COVER DAMAGE ~ When this character receives damage from Special Skills or in place of an ally in Cover, there’s a 60% chance to deal 20% of the received damage to all enemies.

OC’s Question: Would this change the Talent/Emblem Path you’d take with a Musketeer?

As a commenter pointed out, this Family Bonus has been changed from Beta to have the Hero take more damage (up from 50%, 25%, 10%). So, the Musketeers are likely to take a lot of damage when providing ‘Cover’.

Queen Anne – Empires and Puzzles

Key Facts: Nature (Green), Slow, Cleric, Musketeer Family

This Hero was buffed after this review. Details have been updated, however, the review remains the same

Special Skills (The Queen’s Speech): 1. The caster gets Taunt which prevents enemies from using Special Skills on the caster’s allies for 6 turns. 2. All allies get +65% Defense for 6 turns. 3. All allies get +44% Mana generation for 6 turns. 4. Caster regenerates 918 HP over 6 turns.

Talent: MANASHIELD ~ +35% chance to resist any negative mana status effects or effects that prevent the use of Special Skills.

Queen Anne Review (Empires and Puzzles)

I initially planned to write one or two Hero reviews from this Portal, with Queen Anne as the focal point. But everything changed when the Brave Musketeers were released!

In Beta, Queen Anne was simply ridiculous and spelt the end of any battle. Here’s what she did in Beta:

1. The caster gets Taunt which prevents enemies from using Special Skills on the caster’s allies for 6 turns. 2. All allies get +65% Defense for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled. 3. All allies get +54% Mana generation for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled. 4. All allies get +50% attack for 6 turns. This effect can’t be dispelled.

As you can see, Queen Anne lost many of her royal privileges. -The attack Buff is completely gone, the Mana Buff was reduced (from +54% to +44%), and the undispellable aspect of the Special has been erased.

None of this is accidental, of course. There has been a lot of noise surrounding the OP nature of the Musketeers, and in particular, Queen Anne.

It’s the reason I set aside some time today to talk about them.

But, what does this mean for Queen Anne?

That she’s no longer a megastar.

But she is still a powerful Taunt Hero.

How Good is Queen Anne? (Brave Musketeers)

I’ve plucked this Taunters table from my Kara review. Let’s update it with Queen Anne. (Hopefully, it’s not missing any Nerfs/Buffs since then).

OldCynic.com – Queen Anne Vs. Taunt Heroes

There’s no doubt that Queen Anne has suffered tremendously since Beta. Ludwig, the other Slow Taunter here, offers much more with his spiralling Mana jumps.

The increased Defense (+65%) is nothing we can’t get from a Vivica. And the +44% Mana, while powerful, isn’t likely going to be enough to earn a spot on a team on its own merit.

But with all that said, Queen Anne is still a force when you consider the whole package.

Queen Anne and the Total Package (Empires and Puzzles)

Screenshot of Queen Anne Empires and Puzzles Special Skills

Taunt is still a uniquely valuable Skill, and here it also acts to protect the +65% Defense and +44% Mana Buffs that Queen Anne casts.

Also, according to my tests on the Event version of Queen Anne, she also gets both of those powerful Buffs… That’s +65% Defense on Taunt.

And that protection will last, just like Ludwig’s, for 6 long turns.

That’s a lot of time to enjoy +44% Mana.

Thankfully, Queen Anne isn’t here to dethrone the last overpowered, nightmare, next-level, Monster.

Instead, she’s here to present a serious problem, which if not probably checked, could still mean the end of a battle.

Hero Grade for Queen Anne (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? Yes.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? N/a.

D’Artagnan – Empires and Puzzles

D'Artagnan Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Key Facts: Fire (Red), Fast, Paladin, Musketeer Family

This Hero was buffed after this review. Details have been updated, however, the review remains the same

Special Skills (Flaming Rapier): 1. Deals 500% 470% damage to the target. 2. The target receives 849 1023 Burn damage over 3 turns. This effect spreads to nearby enemies. 3. Caster regenerates 459 HP over 3 turns.

Talent: PROTECT ~ +25% chance to get +25% defense for 2 turns after receiving and damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.

D’Artagnan Review (Empires and Puzzles)

I’m a huge fan of Rayne, and D’Artagnan looks like a new iteration of the concept.

This is what Rayne does at Ave:

Special Skills (Plague Blade): 1. Deals 400% damage to the target. 2. Target receives 1300 Poison damage over 5 turns. This effect is contagious.

So, D’Artagnan only gives 849 damage, and it’s over fewer turns (3).

It’s worth noting that I have presumed that both Specials act in the same way, and if that’s the case, I love the look of D’Artagnan.

Some other notes on these two:

  • D’Artagnan hits for more at 500% (on 834 ATK Vs. Rayne at 400% on 815 ATK)
  • Rayne has a Family Bonus which could make her Ailment uncleansable
  • Ailment Damage per turn = D’Artagnan at 283 Vs. Rayne at 260
  • Finally, fewer turns means that the Ailment will end sooner when spread

Here’s a table illustrating their Damage Over Time Specials, this is assuming the initial target is the Tank, and the DOT damage is spread through all Heroes to both sides, causing the maximum possible damage:

To reflect the difference in overall DOT, I’m going to grade D’Artagnan a step below Rayne, but both are fantastic, and I would love to get D’Artagnan.

Aramis – Empires and Puzzles

Aramis Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Key Facts: Dark (Purple), Average, Ranger, Musketeer Family

This Hero was buffed after this review. Details have been updated, however, the review remains the same

Special Skills (Charmer’s Blades): 1. Deals 375% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. Boosts all allies’ health by 30% of damage dealt. 3. All allies are immune to new Status Ailments for 3 turns. This effect cannot be dispelled. 4. Caster gets +30% Defense for 3 turns.

Talent: PIERCE ~ +25% chance to bypass defensive buffs when attacking. This includes counterattacks.

Aramis Review (Empires and Puzzles)

Alright, my favourite for last.

I say ‘my favourite’, but Aramis is really just the most devastating.

This chap does 375% damage to 3 enemies (on 869! ATK).

Then, he’ll Boost all allies by 30% health, based on the crazy amount of damage he just inflicted.

Then, he’ll make them all immune to new Status Ailments for 3 turns. Oh, and that’s undispellable.

And it’s that cherry on top that I like/hate.

If I’m honest, I hate these new Heroes who shut down (or toss back) Status Effects, coz how are you supposed to beat them?

Nonetheless, Aramis attaches that to an already ridiculous Special.

And to think, he’s been slightly Nerfed since Beta (from 40% Boosted Health to 30%).

😄 And he’s a Ranger!

My only problem with Aramis is that Family Bonus. I would rate him a Deity: T-3, had it not been for it.

As it stands, he could be liable for taking the damage of 2 Heroes, which at any given moment could wipe him out. Not a good look for a T-3.

(Update: Aramis features in my Raid Squad/Current Meta post here.)

Queen Anne, D’Artagnan & Aramis (Empires and Puzzles)

My final thoughts:

I picked Queen Anne, D’Artagnan, and Aramis, to review, but I also like Athos (who could easily start loop-slapping Minion hoarders) and Porthos (an absolute wall of pain). Plus, I like that new 4-Star Hero, Villiers.

Quickly on Villiers…

I reckon that guy could easily be used by some mid-tier Raiders. I would definitely try.

Villiers Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Check out his Fiends; -They steal the target’s Buff and give it to an ally. That’s worse than Diaochan!

Who’s gonna defend against Villiers in a 4-Star Tourney? What about a 4-Star Bloody? 😁

What an awesome 4-Star Hero. But don’t do too much with him, we know what happened to Azmia and Ferant.

Anyway, the Brave Musketeers still look incredibly strong and fun, despite Queen Anne taking a haircut.

Before you go, why not share your thoughts on the matter and all these new Heroes?!

  1. Enjoy your reviews but for these musketeers, isn’t the family bonus cover now more like a Quintin ailment curse?

The chance to cast cover remains the same. 50% 75% 100% respectively for 1,2,3 family heroes but the amount of damage caster receives went from 50% 25% 10% to 90% 80% 70%!

If athos cast cover on aramis, any AOE hitter or hit3 (if both heroes are within 2 of each other) who hits both means athos receives 100% damage plus 70% damage for the cover.

Easier to kill him now and the cover is removed, right?

Got incredibly lucky this summons. 200 pulls for 3 QA, 2 athos, 2 porthos and one aramis. Would have loved dartagnan but after thinking about the family cover, this is one family you don’t want to pair on the same team.

    1. Hey 3piphany, I make it the same which is why I refer to the Talent Path… These guys are gonna take damage. Queen Anne looks good for it (based on the increased Defense for all of the 6 turns -But also, she’s Taunting), but the others here, not so much.

Going back to Beta, you’re right: 50%, 25%, 10%. A significant change to the FB. It doesn’t look great on that front at all but does need real-world testing as it has seen such a big change.

Congrats on the pulls… 🎉🎊🥳 3QA! And thanks for highlighting the Family Bonus.

    2. Coming back to this, on reflection I’ve moved Aramis down one step from my initial release because he stands to be more limited if taking the highest damage in the worst-case scenario. Thanks again.

  2. Hi
This morning I was very lucky, i had 2 pulls from the last event and I´v gotten Porthos, I thought It was a great addition to my blue titan team but having jot I don´t see the point in raising it. My other blue heroes to raise think are more useful (C snow white, C Perseus and Skadi)
    What do you think??

    1. Hi Sergio, you do have better options, I partially like C Perseus; he’s crazy.

Porthos is a solid Hero who will have his uses, but you’re citing better (and quicker) Heroes, so the matter is moot. That said, he may be useful to a stacked team if that’s in your plans.

      Thanks for visiting!

      1. Wow. The attack stats alone in the opponents in this event already make it absurdly difficult. Throw in the absurd powers of the heroes we face, and no causal player has a chance at any level. Only the huge spenders will succeed. So sad, but this is going to drive away a lot of long time players.

    1. Hello, that’s Limit Broken. I thought I’d stick to the standard figures coz this site has stats everywhere based on them.

Thanks for the heads up tho, I appreciate it!

  3. Hey Old cynic!

Thank you for the quick review. Got lucky and pulled Athos on a 10 pull. What are your quick thoughts on him? At first I was very excited to use him against minion gods at very fast but him casting cover at also very fast speed will kill him almost instantly so I am now a bit confused… Would love to read your thoughts!

    1. Hey PM, as you can see from the discussion, this FB isn’t looking too smart.

If they’re taking the damage of 2 heroes without a Defense boost, then they’ll likely not enjoy the same survival rate as other heroes. It would be good to have it confirmed. Maybe you could test it on a map stage without levelling and return?

As for Athos, he’s fantastic imv. I nearly included him on the list. Love the power, the speed, and the near looping slap he’ll be able to dole out in this meta. Great on offence for sure… this FB sticking point aside.

I keep re-reading it and it seems most players who only have 1 Musketeer are gonna have to take it into their strategy because 50% can feel like 99% in this game!

  4. D’artagnan and Rayne should be compared against the amount of DoT damage per tick as it serves as a better measurement of effectiveness for these types of heroes. For D’artagnan, he does 283/tick whereas Rayne does 260/tick. This shows that D’artagnan does more damage than Rayne if their duration were the same. Additionally, D’artagnan is faster and does 100% more direct damage than Rayne.

  5. I have read all of your review and what I summarized is that your review is biased and can not catch the current meta. I am very disappointed for many reasons: overrated slow heroes and underrated good pvp heroes; ignoring good heroes for challenge type event; overrated any revival heroes. Please check what real HIGH END players bring.

    1. Hey Librasky1004, you are absolutely welcome to your point of view. I don’t claim to be the all-knowing one, I write a fun blog and share an early opinion. And, I can often be wrong; as is the nature of these things.
