Tower of Styx: Quest & Heroes (Empires and Puzzles)

A painting of the river Styx with Tower of Styx text overlay

The Tower of Styx is finally here. I can’t remember a more hotly anticipated Empires and Puzzles Event, outside of a new Season. It’s all due to start on Wednesday, September 21st 2022, and looks set to run for 5 days.

[Heroes have been Buffed since this post was initially published. Details have been updated, however, the reviews remain the same]

The event will introduce a new family of heroes, two of which we’ve already seen in the Solstice Summon Portal back in June; Hypnos and Nyx.

In this post, I’ll cover The Tower of Styx Quest and introduce each of the new heroes.

Before we start, please consider sharing a link to this post with your alliance or on social media. It really does help.

Tower of Styx Quest | Empires and Puzzles

**Event guide based on Beta information and therefore subject to change**

The Tower of Styx runs for 5 days. The Event itself is similar to the Tower of Magic, in that you’ll have a number of Floors to complete, but this time you’re descending the Tower, rather than climbing it.

There will be 2 difficulty levels, Normal and Impossible. Each level has 25 Floors and you’ll need to complete the Normal level before moving on to Impossible.

Each Floor will need to be completed before progressing on to the next, and Stages can not be replayed once completed.

Like with the other Tower Events, the Tower of Styx will use separate Tower energy flags. -You will receive 10 flags a day during the event and will have the option of purchasing more.

Also, like the Ninja Tower, Floors may have different effects, like Toxic Vapor, Fragile Floor, Erratic Time, etc.

You’ll also see the Blessings feature in this Tower event. Every 5 Floors, you’ll be able to choose 1 Blessing from a selection of 3, similar to what we’ve seen in the other Tower Events.

Tower of Styx Gameplay Rules | Empires and Puzzles

There are a couple of special gameplay features for the Tower of Styx Event; Soul Grasps and Soul Loan.

Soul Grasps – Special Tiles:

Unlike the Special Tiles on the other Tower events, Soul Grasps won’t curse your heroes. Instead, Soul Grasps are more like the Egg Bombs in the Springvale event, on steroids.

Soul Grasp hand icons will randomly appear in place of a tile on the board in one of the elemental colours with a countdown timer, counting down your moves starting from 3.

The Soul Grasp will target one of your heroes and you’ll need to match them with tiles of the same Element to remove them from the board before the timer runs out.

If you fail to remove them within the 3 moves they will explode and cause damage to the targeted hero.

The amount of damage caused ranges from around 600 HP to 1000 HP on Normal Stages, and 1100 HP to 1200 HP on Impossible Stages.

If you do manage to match the Soul Grasps within the 3 moves, they will give Boosted healing to the targeted hero instead.

The amount of Boosted HP depends on the amount of time left on the Soul Grasp. The lower the counter, the more Boosted HP given.

With 3 turns remaining, your targeted hero will get around 12% of their max HP as Boosted HP. With 2 turns remaining, your hero will receive around 24%. And with only 1 turn remaining, they’ll get around 35% of their max HP as Boosted HP.

There can be more than 1 Soul Grasp on the board at a time, each targeting a different hero.

Soul Loan – Special Gameplay Rule:

During the Tower of Styx Quest, there will be limitations on the Class of hero you can take into battle.

The mysterious ferryman of the river Styx, Charon, will take some of your heroes’ souls as guarantee for letting you enter the Tower.

For every 5 Floors, the souls of 4 Hero Classes will be ‘Loaned’ and you won’t be able to take heroes belonging to these Classes into battle.

Here’s a chart of the Classes that will be on Soul Loan (Beta information/Subject to change):

Normal LevelClasses on Soul Loan (Hero Classes that can’t be used)
1-5Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid, Monk
6-10Druid, Cleric, Wizard, Sorcerer
11-15Paladin, Rogue, Monk, Sorcerer
16-20Monk, Barbarian, Cleric, Druid
21-25Sorcerer, Ranger, Fighter, Wizard
Impossible Level
1-5Fighter, Ranger, Barbarian, Druid
6-10Sorcerer, Rogue, Monk, Cleric
11-15Barbarian, Rogue, Wizard, Druid
16-20Monk, Sorcerer, Rogue, Paladin
21-25Ranger, Barbarian, Druid, Wizard
OldCynic.com – List of Soul Loans for Tower of Styx

Heroes from the new Styx Family will be exempt from this Soul Loan rule, so you’ll be able to freely use any Styx Heroes for any of the Floors.

Tower of Styx Rewards, Summoning, and Cyclopes Troops

Players will receive exclusive rewards based on their ranking at the end of the event. Scores from both the Normal Quest and the Impossible Quest, are combined to determine your final ranking.

As for Summoning, it will cost 100 Tower Coins or 300 Gems for a single spin.

A 10-pull will set you back 2600 Gems.

Cyclopes Troops (Empires and Puzzles)

The new Tower of Styx Event may introduce some new Troops; Styx Troops aka Cyclopes Troops.

These new Troops are like a mix of the Ninja and Magic Troops, offering a Mana Bonus plus a chance to Bypass.

There will be an Epic (4-Star) Troop for each element, named as follows:

  • Holy – Fierce Cyclopes
  • Dark – Savage Cyclopes
  • Fire – Ferocious Cyclopes
  • Nature – Menacing Cyclopes
  • Ice – Conjurer Cyclopes

When maxed (level 30), the Cyclopes Troops will give the following Troop bonuses:

  • Attack – 20%
  • Defence – 15%
  • Mana Bonus – 20%
  • Bypass Defensive Buffs – 25%
Cyclopes Troops Empires and Puzzles Tower of Styx
OldCynic.com – Tower of Styx Cyclopes Troops (Empires and Puzzles)

As with the Ninja and Magic Troops, these will be available from the Epic Troop Summons Portal during the Tower of Styx Event.

You can use Epic Troop Tokens for a free pull, or it will cost 200 Gems for 1 pull, and 1600 gems for 10 pulls.

Again though, this is early information and things may change.

Done. Let’s take a look at those heroes!

Tower of Styx Family Bonus

The heroes from this new event will enjoy a Styx Family Bonus, which gives a chance to reflect any Defense-Down they receive back to the entire enemy team!

Styx Family Bonus for 1/2/3 Heroes: When this Hero receives a Status Ailment affecting Defense they get a 40%/60%/80% chance to cast the received Ailment to all enemies.

When this Hero casts their Special Skill, they have a 40%/60%/80% chance to inflict -30% Mana generation for 2 turns.

Passive Skill: DECREASE DEFENSE AILMENT DURATION ~ Duration of the Defense Status Ailment this character receives from Special Skills is decreased by 2 turns.

The Hero has an innate resistance against Defense Status Ailments and Elemental Defense Status Ailments.

Tower of Styx Mana Speeds (Empires and Puzzles)

Like the other Tower heroes, Ninja and Magic, Styx Family heroes will have their own tiered Mana generation metrics.

Styx Heroes have three different Special Skill effects for 3 stages of Mana charge:

Styx Charge 1: Represents 100% of Mana charge, which takes approximately 6 tiles (slightly faster than VERY FAST). Once obtained, the first Special Skill is available for activation.

Styx Charge 2: Represents 200% of Mana charge, which takes approximately 9 tiles (1 less than AVERAGE). Once obtained, the second Special Skill is available for activation.

Styx Charge 3: Represents 300% of Mana charge, which takes approximately 12 tiles (equal to SLOW). Once obtained, the third Special Skill is available for activation.

The Styx’s charge 2 and 3 Special Skill sets are not just a more powerful version of the charge 1 Special Skill, like with the Ninjas. -They won’t necessarily be related to each other.

Next up -The actual Heroes! We’ve already seen 2 of the Styx Family Heroes, Hypnos and Nyx, and we’re expecting 10 more to join the family.

Review Note:

In the past, I’ve reviewed heroes from new Events based on Beta information. But last time, I was completely done, as on the morning of the Event I discovered that a whole heap had changed!

As a result, I will no longer cover Events in the same frequency, however, I had to cover the Styx Family!

That said, my intention is to actually write the reviews for this event after the heroes have been released, so I’m not left evaluating a bunch of changes on the fly, and then having to write about them twice.

For now, you can still check out all the Heroes and what we currently know about them!

(5-Star heroes will receive Hero Grades but with the others, I’ll simply share my opinion. That’s due to the research required to provide a worthwhile grade that I’m happy with!)

All 5 Star Tower of Styx Heroes (Empires and Puzzles)

There are seven, 5-Stars (Legendary) heroes, in the Tower of Styx Family:

Hypnos (Styx Family) Empires and Puzzles

Hypnos Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Fire (Red) Class: Sorcerer Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Sweet dreams:

Charge 1: 1. Deals 170% 220% damage to all enemies. 2. All enemies are immune to new Status Buffs for 2 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Dispels Buffs from all enemies. 2. Deals 270% 320% damage to all enemies. 3. All enemies are immune to new Status Buffs for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Dispels Buffs from all enemies. 2. Deals 335% 385% damage to all enemies. 3. All enemies are immune to new Status Buffs for 4 turns.

Talent: DELAY ~ +15% chance to drop the mana generation of the enemy by -50% for 2 turns after dealing damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.

Thoughts On Hypnos:

Hypnos is a perfect example of why the Styx Family is so eagerly anticipated; They’re strong as f#*k, don’t muck around, and are useful on each Tier of their Special.

-The implication being that some are worthy of a spot on Defense.

Hypnos is all about Mass Control and Mass damage.

He’s devastating because he strips off your Buffs before laying the mother of all Smackdowns on your budgeting bunch of Try-Hards.

Hypnos doesn’t stop there; now he wants to annoy you before he heads off into the sunset, so he makes you immune to new Buffs for 2, 3, or 4 turns.

I rate Hypnos because he’s a one-button Wonder. Sure, he doesn’t hit as hard as Khafre or Milena, but he does own 2 of the game’s most powerful Skills. And, they are executed in the ‘right’ order:

  1. Dispels all buffs (before he engages) and
  2. Inflicts Status Buff Immunity (as he leaves)

Old Cynic’s Hero Grade: Deity ⭐⭐⭐

Nyx (Empires and Puzzles – Tower of Styx)

Nyx Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Dark (Purple) Class: Wizard Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Night Falls:

Charge 1: 1. Deals 170% 220% damage to all enemies. 2. All allies get +30% Attack for 3 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Deals 300% 360% damage to all enemies. 2. All enemies get -34% Defense for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Deals 335% 395% damage to all enemies. 2. All allies get +50% Attack for 4 turns. 3. All enemies get -44% Defense for 4 turns.

Talent: JINX ~ +25% chance to deal +15% extra damage per each active buff the enemies have. The extra damage applies to both normal attacks and Special Skills.

Thoughts On Nyx:

Nyx hits slightly harder than Hypnos on that second Tier, otherwise, their slapping technique is the same.

She’s all about the numbers, most notably on the second and third Tier of her Special (-34% Defense to all enemies and -44% Defense to all enemies).

The added Attack bonus she provides is also not to be sniffed at.

I see Nyx as a super hitter with benefits. She’s an aggressive and speedy hero who wants to win her battles sooner rather than later.

Her snappy 170% 220% to all with a +30% Attack boost (in 6 tiles) might become a little irritating to face, however, as a Dark hero, she probably won’t get much of a chance to show it off on Defense.

Erebus (Tower of Styx) Empires and Puzzles

Erebus Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Fire (Red) Class: Wizard Mana Speed: Styx

Charge 2: 1. Destroys all Minions from the target. 2. Deals 580% 610% damage to the target. 3. The target can not summon new Minions with their Special Skill and receives 150 200 damage for each Minion they attempt to summon for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Destroys all Minions from the target. 2. Deals 645% 675% damage to the target. 3. The target can not summon new Minions with their Special Skill and receives 150 200 damage for each Minion they attempt to summon for 4 turns.

Talent: JINX ~ +25% chance to deal +15% extra damage per each active buff the enemies have. The extra damage applies to both normal attacks and Special Skills.

Thoughts On Erebus:

Erebus is a hard-hitting Sniper with a thing against Minion Summoners.

Charge 2: 1. Deals 610% 640% damage to the target. 2. All enemies are immune to new Status Effect Buffs for 3 turns. Attempted Mana generation Buffs will be replaced by -34% Mana generation for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Deals 650% 680% damage to the target. 2. All enemies are immune to new status effect buffs for 3 turns. Attempted Mana generation Buffs will be replaced by -34% Mana generation for 3 turns. 3. For 3 turns each time an enemy’s Mana is increased by a Special Skill, Status Effect, Level Property, Passive Skill, Family Effect or Minion, they receive 200 250 damage.

Talent: PROTECT ~ +25% chance to get +25% defense for 2 turns after receiving and damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.

Nemesis looks like a great Sniper with valuable Mana-Controlling abilities.

Thanatos is a new addition to the Tower of Styx Heroes.

Amphitrite (Empires and Puzzles)

Amphitrite Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Ice (Blue) Class: Monk Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Tidal Force:

Charge 1: 1. Deals 200% damage to all enemies. 2. All enemies get -25% decrease of any healing received for 3 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Deals 315% damage to all enemies. 2. Summons a Styx Spirit Fiend for all enemies. The Fiend damages its target with 40% attack every turn. 3. The Styx Spirit Fiend absorbs healing and disappears after absorbing healing equal to 25% of its target’s max health.

Charge 3: 1. Deals 365% damage to all enemies. 2. Summons a Styx Spirit Fiend for all enemies. The Fiend damages its target with 40% attack every turn. 3. All 4 Star Tower of Styx Heroes (Empires and Puzzles)

There are three, 4-Stars (Epic) heroes, in the Tower of Styx Family:

Arges (Empires and Puzzles)

Arges Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Dark (Purple) Class: Wizard Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Potion Cocktail:

Charge 1: 1. Deals 165% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. The caster and nearby allies get +30% Attack for 3 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Deals 215% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. The target and nearby enemies get -34% Defense for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Deals 365% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. The caster and nearby allies get +50% Attack for 4 turns. 3. The target and nearby enemies get -44% Defense for 4 turns.

Talent: JINX ~ +25% chance to deal +15% extra damage per each active buff the enemies have. The extra damage applies to both normal attacks and Special Skills.

Thoughts On Arges:

Arges is a stats Monster. That first Charge looks really useful as it will sting at the beginning of a battle and buff nearby allies for a nice +30% Attack.

The 3 Charge system will have its limitations on Defense, but as he hits 3 enemies, there will always be some help (in that all 3 Charges will do something to assist your team).

As Arges is a new hero, he benefits from modern Power Stats, and he’s also got that amazing Family Bonus (Defense).

A really solid hero who I’d love to own, -mainly for the versatility, Family Bonus, and devastating 3rd Charge.

Brontes (Styx Family) Empires and Puzzles

Brontes Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Nature (Green) Class: Monk Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Good Dose of Garlic:

Charge 1: 1. Recovers 25% health for the caster and nearby allies. 2. The caster and nearby allies get +24% Mana generation for 2 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Recovers 35% health for the caster and nearby allies. 2. Increases the Mana of the caster and nearby allies by 10%.

Charge 3: 1. Recovers 55% health for the caster and nearby allies. 2. Increases the Mana of the caster and nearby allies by 30%. 3. The caster and nearby allies get +40% Mana generation for 4 turns.

Talent: WITHSTAND ~ +30% chance to resist negative status effects.

Thoughts On Brontes:

Brontes is a budget Thanatos, and I would be over the moon to get him.

If I got him today, I would be planning on how to fit him into a 3/2 Green heavy Raid squad.

I would sit him right next to Lady of the Lake and make sweet music.

I don’t have to tell you that for a 4-Star hero to have this much Mana Boosting, Casting, Buffing ability, is next-level stuff.

Please let me get this hero! (I will not chase though… Never chase).

Steropes (Tower of Styx) Empires and Puzzles

Steropes Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Holy (Yellow) Class: Cleric Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Mending Masterpiece:

Charge 1: 1. All allies regenerate 324 Boosted health over 3 turns (can exceed max HP).

Charge 2: 1. If any ally dies during the next 3 turns they are resurrected at the beginning of their next turn with 20% health. All Status Effects and Stacks are removed when the ally dies.

Charge 3: 1. All allies regenerate 584 Boosted health over 4 turns (can exceed max HP). 2. If any ally dies during the next 4 turns they are resurrected at the beginning of their next turn with 40% health. All Status Effects and Stacks are removed when the ally dies.

Talent: MANASHIELD ~ +35% chance to resist any negative mana status effects or effects that prevent the use of Special Skills.

Thoughts On Steropes:

I’m not a huge fan of Steropes. His Charges are too different to be useful in most parts of the game (like auto’ing Stages for example).

That first Charge looks a little weak for the modern Meta (I say that, but old Gullinbursti gives you 400 Boosted on a Slow Charge).

The second Charge looks handy, but even then, you’ll have to time it right. (And, there’s no healing, although it is a guaranteed rebirth for 3 turns).

The third Charge is fantastic, but it’s 12 tiles away.

I would take him if I got him. -Try him out in some line-ups, only partially levelled, to see if there’s something to that 2nd or 3rd Charge. I’m thinking looping synergy. Imagine him on the flank/wing protecting the Tank… Maybe a Mana Charger beside him.

I like him, but he’s not a showstopper.

All 3 Star Tower of Styx Heroes (Empires and Puzzles)

There are two, 3-Stars (Rare) heroes, in the Styx Family:

Dante (Empires and Puzzles)

Dante Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Fire (Red) Class: Rogue Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Dante’s Inferno:

Charge 1: 1. Deals 105% damage to all enemies. 2. The attack bypasses Defensive Buffs including Counterattack.

Charge 2: 1. Deals 125% damage to all enemies. 2. The attack bypasses Defensive Buffs including Counterattack. 3. All enemies receive 120 Burn damage over 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Deals 205% damage to all enemies. 2. The attack bypasses Defensive Buffs including Counterattack. 3. All enemies receive 160 Burn damage over 4 turns.

Talent: EVADE ~ +20% chance to dodge direct damage from offensive Special skills.

Thoughts On Dante:

Nothing crazy here. Charge 1 is equivalent to Bauchan. The bypassing of Defensive Buffs will make the matter more pressing, but nothing to sell the house for.

If you don’t have any decent 3-Stars, or you want the modern Power Stats, Dante is your man.

Virgil (Empires and Puzzles)

Virgil Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Element: Ice (Blue) Class: Cleric Mana Speed: Styx

Special Skill – Poet’s Protection:

Charge 1: 1. Recovers 15% health for all allies. 2. All allies get +40% Defense against Nature for 2 turns.

Charge 2: 1. Recovers 25% health for all allies. 2. All allies get +54% Defense against Special Skills for 3 turns.

Charge 3: 1. Recovers 45% health for all allies. 2. All allies get +94% Defense against Nature for 4 turns. 3. All allies get +74% Defense against Special Skills for 4 turns.

Talent: MANASHIELD ~ +35% chance to resist any negative mana status effects or effects that prevent the use of Special Skills.

Thoughts On Virgil:

Virgil looks to be a nice Healer; that 15% in 6 tiles might be handy.

He’s gonna have to Tank-It (or be stacked) for the Defense against Nature to work out.

The second Charge looks the most interesting (because it’s the most accessible+useful), which could make the middle of a 3-Star battle much less frantic!

Tower of Styx Empires and Puzzles Guide

I’m not normally a Tower guy, but I will be giving this one a proper go for:

  1. Any free spins I might get,
  2. Coz there are fewer levels than the Tower of Magic, and
  3. Coz Soul Grasps look fun; like a new in-game strategy.

We all know the new Styx Family look impressive, and their Family Bonus can’t help but make them more valuable to whoever gets them.

Oh, and don’t sleep on the 4-Star heroes in this bunch, they look fantastic too.

It’s nearly here… Just three more Sleeps ’til the big day!

Who’s your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.

Hold up! … I forgot to mention the Achilles’-Heel thing…

Will this Tower be your Achilles’-Heel?

Booooooo! That was sooo poor.

  1. Nice post!
Looking forward to a new event with new gameplay (and hopefully some good loot)
Those 4* all look good for their rarity, while the most sought after 5* for me would be Hypnos, Thanatos (mana-guy) and Charon (60% revive).
Those snipers seem a bit underwhelming, as on a third charge you want to hit more than one enemy, even if that enemy is toast after.
But reaching second charge in only 9 tiles is pretty amazing

  2. Amazing post cynic!!! So easy to understand and I think the layout is easier to read then on a message board! I want Thanatos!!!!

  3. Classes on Soul Loan have changed from Beta
Floors 1-5 Druid Sorcerer Wizard Monk
Floors 6-10 Druid Sorcerer Wizard Cleric
    THX 4 your blog

  4. Enjoying descending(!) the tower so far, I love the mechanism of having some classes excluded per 5 levels. That way you’re forced to be creative with creating teams. Plus, it’s less annoying than losing one of your better hearoes early on just because you got a crappy board.

The heroes look pretty good, unfortunately I haven’t been lucky enough to pull any of them. Got a nice bunch of Kalliani, Valen and Azar. =( Hopefully I’ll be more lucky in the future.

  5. I got the Mini Thanatos, but since my passion is to gather 4-star green heroes, I think it will take a time.

I really enjoyed the tower, it is mucho more fun than the other two. I liked the event and the troops, but not quite the heroes.

    Nice article, OC.

  6. Whenever I get a new hero I come to this blog to see your review as they are usually absolutely spot on! Super lucky and super happy I got Thanatos today (with one single diamonds pull)…I still need to take a deep breath LOL But I see you haven’t yet reviewed it.. I bet with endless new heroes is hard to impossible to write about all of them – but maybe you could get me your quick impressions about him and possible grade?

    1. Congrats Marty! It has been difficult of late keeping up with all the new heroes. I think you might find my fb group useful where you can normally get an opinion from like minded players. You (and anyone) can join here!

I like to study a hero and their peers before grading which is why I haven’t graded every hero (not enough time). But I feel the result is better grading than when I first started.

Thank you for the support and for reading my blog!
