Zengar Review (Empires & Puzzles)

Zengar Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Zengar is the latest Super Elemental Hero to front up at the Empires and Puzzles Portal. And as you can tell from the crazed look in his eyes, he enjoys this stuff a little too much… Well, at least when his foe is Fire.

This post may contain speculation, personal opinion, and adult comedy. It is not advice and is solely for entertainment and informational purposes.

Does Zengar have any real value in today’s Empires and Puzzles?

Of course! Most new Heroes trapped behind the paywall of luck have some inherent value. And there’s definitely something to be said for Zengar.

I was fortunate enough to test this chap in Beta, and it was funny as f#*k chasing around Fire Heroes to slap.

Zengar was calling out their names before even a single tile had been turned…

“Khufu, hey Khufu! I know you see me! Don’t you cut your eye at me! I’m coming to trim your nails you fool! I’m gonna take that tube and stick it where the sun don’t shine!”.

I was telling Zengar to cool his boots; tried to tell him that Khufu was not the one to play with. But Zengar just kept teasing him.

“Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Hey Khufu, I got a ball of yarn at home, -After I’m done domesticating you, we’ll play chase the string!”

Even Malosi tried to temper him. He pulled Zengar aside and explained it: “Yo, Zenga, just chill it man. Even if I manage to tap that one early, there’s not much I can do. Just ease it back a bit. I’ve seen him go and it ain’t pretty”.

I couldn’t believe what happened next. Zengar switched on Malosi, “Get off me, man! I’m in the Zone man! I’m in his head, man! Just let me work, man!”

I will say this though, Zengar seems to have some weird double reverse psychology going on, in that, he seemed to spare Khufu the full wrath of his backhand while tagging his henchmen good and proper.

Either way, when there weren’t any Fire Heroes to p*ss him off, Zengar was a completely different animal. I don’t know how to explain it…

…it was like he was bored.

-No smack talk, no fireworks, just a lacklustre right Cross.

OC talking that Smack? (Empires and Puzzles)

I’ve had a busy day/week, as I know we all have.

So busy that I wouldn’t normally have even attempted to put something together for a new Hero. And it’s not like Zengar’s some crazy OP beast, either.

But I did wanna try and post something a little shorter to see if people still liked it (Let me know in the comments below!).

If I can write something shorter, that would make it more likely that I could get something out.

Zengar is a lot of fun, tho.

And if you do get him, you’ve got a fun Offensive Hero on your hands. And when you manage to catch a Defense with a Fire Hero on it, you can set him to work.

When Zengar hits a Fire Hero, he’s got to be near the top of the game for total damage output at Fast. -That’s a lot of Frost damage on the side there: 417 to the target and 540 to the 2 nearbys over 3 turns.

That said, Zengar isn’t a tap-the-button = win Hero, but he is an entertaining Hero to own. And even though you’d bench him for most of the game, when you do field him (Raids with Fire opposition), he’s gonna be an absolute superstar.

Zengar‘s Special without Fire and Family Bonus (Empires and Puzzles)

Alright, without a Fire Hero to antagonise, Zengar is p*ss poor. So poor in fact, that Balur’s gonna be arguing for a spot over him.

Here is Balur’s “Special” (Average):

  • 1. Deals 450% damage to the target. 2. The target receives 252 Bleed damage over 3 turns.

Vs. Zengar (without a Fire Hero):

  • 1. Deals 200% damage to the target. 2. The target receives 417 Frost damage over 3 turns.

That’s gotta hurt your pride, right?

However, Zengar will replace Ice tiles with “Power Gems” each turn, while Balur is busy scratching his butt.

And even though that doesn’t have much impact on the game, it does scare the living crap outta some people…

Like me!

I absolutely hate it when these Elemental Heroes change tiles. I’m like, “What in the f#*k are you doing!? I’m losing, I’m losing!”

Then you hold down the Hero avatar to see how much damage it does, and you’re like, “I was never really bothered at all”.

My final thoughts:

The difference between an Elite “bad” Hero and a Budget “bad” Hero, is that the Elite “bad” Hero is normally a Specialist which, when utilized within their function, makes them highly desirable.

Zengar is such a Specialist. And it’s the Heroes who stand beside a Fire Hero who will have to pay.

If he were to gain prominence, one would try to position Fire Heroes on the Wing when possible, in an attempt to mitigate and minimise this Special.

However, I don’t think he’ll ever be that visible.

As it stands, I’d only expect to see him on the Scoresheet of a team that just spanked you once in a while, and even then, only if you had a Fire Hero in the lineup.

Zengar is really not of much use, at least if vying for the Top spot, anywhere else.

Still, when he shines, he sparkles like the sun. And let’s remember, a Rainbow Defense Team is still the most popular outside of the elite superstar Heroes and players. You’re never gonna struggle to find a Fire Hero to target.

Also, finding and slapping a Fire Hero is extremely amusing and rewarding. ~It’s a great hobby to take up.

But you can not find lost treasure without a metal detector, and you can not play Slap-a-Red properly, without a Zengar.

As for grading, I’m gonna go with a T-1, on the basis of my summary. -It’s always going to be difficult to grade these extreme Specialists, but Archangel seems too low and T-2, too high.

The porridge is just about right, here.

Hero Grade for Zengar (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this Hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? Yes.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? N/a.

  1. Seems kind of underwhelming, but at some point will start seeing teams with a rainbow of super elementals, the power gems will be really annoying then.

    1. Yes, definitely. The only place he has real value is when facing a red hero. I can see those Super Elemental teams appearing too… I will skip just for the tiles when that day comes.

      1. I talked with the best player of my alliance about this. When available, there will be plenty of rainbow superelemental defence teams. Hard times are coming.

  2. OC, I read your stuff regardless of length… appreciate the thought and detail (and humor) you put into every write-up. I have been playing E&P for a year or so and have built my rosters based upon your overviews and I haven’t been disappointed. Keep up the great work!

    1. She single-handedly changes the value of most of the heroes on her squad… imv, heroes like Ludwig have the same presence, just that Guardian Hippo is Fast. Fast heroes are, of course, gonna work better with her because that three-turn limit can be hard to catch. But overall, there’s loads of crazy synergy for her to find.

imv, the game has long moved away from heroes like Zengar (designed to punch a hole through one side of the defense) and towards, quick kill-all monsters. Timing on D is always gonna be a problem for her, and Control options are available for the Raider.

But at the end of the day, elite rosters can protect against allsorts and offer so many problems that they can simply overwhelm. And Hippo just adds to the problems. The silent killer.

When I tested Hippo, I stuck her on the Wing for raids, and it was silly. With so much potential damage, I’d rank her highly. If pushed, and without crunching numbers, a T-3. Now, can I have one?

  3. Thx again, OC. Short or long … I look forward to your posts. Although, I must say, your idea of short as in this article, is way different to mine. Keep them coming… we really appreciate them.

    1. 😄 Take that section away where I’m asking, and we’re about there. I’ll write a short one soon to see how it goes (right after the next HotM). Thanks for the feedback Helen; much appreciated!

  4. Hi OC:
No matter your article is short or long, you provide such great opinions to this game. Thank you very much for your remarkable work!

  5. Sometimes short is even sweeter!

Zengar is interesting because he is a “minor to target, max to nearby” rather than the normal “minor damage to nearby”.
Being fast, he would work well in a 3-2 or 3-1-1 set up with 3 fast 3xhitters to eliminate 3 opponents with 7 tiles. The good point that he would balance out if one of your hitters is C. Alasie or another with minor to nearby.

But I do believe he should have had two or three different colours expanding his hit. If not hitting a fire hero he is quite meh, even with the frost damage

    1. Hey Tobov, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! I wouldn’t spin at a portal hoping to catch Zengar, but I’d put him to use if I did. Thanks for stopping by!
