Zagrog Review – Empires and Puzzles HotM March 22

Zagrog Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Zagrog is the March 2022 Empires and Puzzles Hero Of The Month (HotM). He’s a hitter who bypasses defensive buffs and also has a few other bells & whistles. But, is he worthy of Mats?

Is Zagrog worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

Not for everybody.

Question is:

Do you prefer control Heroes, functional Heroes, or flat-out hitters?

If it’s the hitters you like, Zagrog may be for you.

But bear in mind, he’s not a sledgehammer to a Watermelon; he’s not Quenell, Mr. Pengi, or Penolite.

He’s more a Season 1 knuckle-dragger, like Richard or Thorne.

Regarding the Defensive bypass

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the Can’t-Miss we see from Russell, Zagrog is only effective against Defensive Buffs.

He will not hit through Dodge or Taunt, although he will hit through Defense-up, counterattack, and other protections.

Also, the 20% mana boost will only trigger once per hit, Max. -No matter how many buffs he bypasses.

Zagrog Vs. Iris… Empires and Puzzles

Zagrog’s slapping form is similar to last month’s HotM Iris, however, he lacks her useful secondary:

IrisFast (8 tiles)Deals 325% damage to target and Minor to NBDispels buffs from the target and NB at the end of each turn for 3 turns.

Here’s the thing: If Zagrog’s meant to be this badass hitter then he needs to actually hit. If not, he’s destined for mediocrity…

I am joking a bit (gotta get the kittens in), because 430% to the target and Minor Damage to Nearby, is perfectly reasonable for a HotM -all considered.

It’s just not enough to create any real buzz, not when compared with the other new Heroes we see.

And sure, the 20% mana boost looks nice on paper, it just feels a lot like Political Math…

“Today, we’re delighted to announce the introduction of a Financial Package designed to support the economy. In unrelated news, we’re expecting a bit of Inflation over the coming years, which we’ll be offsetting with a “settlement” tax, payable in 2025… Questions?”.

😒

As it is, he’s just a bit “meh”.

Next Up, in completely unrelated news, here’s a table populated with some random Heroes:

How Good Is Zagrog? (Empires and Puzzles March HotM)

OldCynic.com – Zagrog Comparison Table

Zagrog looks real nice in the Cobalt comparison, after all, Cobalt is elite.

However, Cobalt hits all 3 targets and arrives with a fresh playbook full of strategic options, adding a versatility that Zagrog could only dream of.

Zagrog actually reminds me of Richard (with a different Secondary).

And while I like, “bypasses defensive buffs and Counterattack”, it’s not a game-changer for me.

Zagrog’s Element Link and Passive Skills

Zagrog has a decent core build, besides *this*:

To start with, he’s Rogue Class (Evade), which is becoming more valuable with every new Hero introduced.

Second, he has a useful Element Link (+10% Defense for 4 turns), -which should be for ALL allies with the Family Bonus next year.

And third, he has 2 adequate passives;

  • Resist Attack Status Effects ~ Includes Stacks, Ailments, and *Buffs*.
  • Resist Mana Ailments.

*And that’s the odd part: He’ll be immune to new Attack buffs.

Regardless, none of this makes too much difference to his overall value.

Zagrog – Empires and Puzzles HotM March 2022

My final thoughts:

There are 3 clear caveats to this review:

  1. Not every new Hero has to be the “Best Hero”. We need average Heroes to make the great ones, great.
  2. My assessment could be wrong.
  3. This Hero is in Beta and may be changed before release.

At the end of the day, Zagrog doesn’t do enough damage (Vs. mana) to WOW anyone. -But that doesn’t mean he won’t fit into your squad.

If you’re playing a FIRE-strong Raid team, he may be the Hero you need. And if you don’t already have a decent 5-Star red, Zagrog could also fit neatly into your Defense line-up.

All that said, Zagrog doesn’t do anything well enough to be a stand-out target for me.

Hero Grade for Zagrog (Empires and Puzzles)

So for my grading, the question is:

Is this Hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? No.

If not, do they still bring enough to the party to help defeat the deities? No.

  1. This HoTM follows the pattern of previous ones, it is alright but nothing to write home about, the real superstar heroes come from the Events.
Am I excited at the thought of pulling this one? No, I have more than enough heroes to develop and nowhere near enough materials to do it. If I didn’t pull another 5* I think I would still be working my through what I have in a years time so if this one passes me by, I won’t be upset.

Thanks again for the information, as ever, a good, well constructed read.

  2. Thanks as always for the review and considerations. Even this hero of the month continues to be a “normal” mistake. Small Giant has been so scared of the Telluria era that it’s been too long that it hasn’t brought out a hero to go crazy for. And I still wonder: when will a red Wu Kong come out? And when a purple one ??? (Although Sergei does his own) … When will a red healer come out capable of being Kunchen’s level ??? When a super sniper ??? No one knows yet … Let’s wait and see …

    1. Sounds about right and it sorta makes sense; I mean, why make a Super Hero who’s a HotM?

HotMs are much more accessible and 1 OP HotM could mean a very unpopular nerf…

So, I figure the goal is to have HotM that are all basically Archangels, but no Deities. -And that works if you think about it, because C2P players have a shot at beating the Whales.

This HotM is a bit weaker, but he’s a hitter and it’s a fine line between OK, and crazy… tiptoeing I suspect…

  3. One additional thought… the bypass defense will help against Ludwig or Krampus extremely increased defense. Could be very valuable against these superheroes!

    1. Sorry for the late response, absolutely fair point. He’s a useful hero, just not my cup of tea. I’m more into heroes who can help me manage the deities… mainly because I don’t have them! He can slap for sure. Thanks for visiting.

  4. The best direct comparison here is Marjana. She only has season one stats, but hits for 458% damage vs Zagrog’s 430%, has fast mana vs average and gives that nasty burn secondary. She’s also got that annoying Rogue dodge perk and if you are lucky, you can pick up one of the best costume upgrades. If you aren’t noticeably better than a season one sniper, I can’t see a use.

    1. Hey Fast, yea it’s those season 1 comparisons that hurt him. The bypass is really nice, but when comparing him with the deities, it is what it is. Certainly useful to some, & HotMs should be, just a solid hitter in my eyes.

That said, I wouldn’t just stand there and let Richard swing at me… and don’t intend to let this guy have a go either.

      Thanks for visiting!

  5. You forget his sword strength is more than richard and marjana so he will certainly hit stronger
He will gain 20% mana when a defensive buff is bypassed even from an ally
Like griffin,Tyr, Cobalt,Saphire, rangers passive skill

  6. Quick note: She, not he. (Though their internal gender will never be known.)
I’m jazzed for her. Been upping her to replace the disappointing Yang Mai. Fits in well with my red team.

    1. Same, Yang Mai is my current level 85 red and my weakest link. I’ve been waiting for a better red. If he/she (Zag.) was fast I would be even more excited. No one enjoys upgrading their defence team by slowing it down. Pulled him her today.

  7. Read you review last month…like I do and let it rest. Then red it again and totally agree. Everything about “her” is pretty much standard S1. The comments of the crowd are also correct…we fear putting another rock star in HoTM (I was so lucky with Telluria I have 6! 2 are full up 80…consider a team of 5!). Love your blog…I constantly am asked to asses my team’s best option to upgrade and point them this way…then pretty much tell them my thoughts…which are close with yours…good job!

    1. Hey Mak, thanks for the support. With all the new superstars arriving, it’s becoming clearer what we have with Zagrog, and that’s not a problem, it’s just what it is. Zagrog’s still a great hero, but no point overselling.

Thank you for reading and referring folk this way, I am very grateful!
