How Good is Wolfgang? Empires and Puzzles Review

Screenshot of Wolfgang Hero Card from Empires and Puzzles

Wolfgang is my favourite new 5-Star Hero from the Empires and Puzzles’ Clash Of Knights. He’s not the best, but he is pretty amazing.

I just released a complete Clash Of Knights Quest guide, which included an initial review of all the new Heroes. So, if you’re interested in another Hero, check it out.

This post may contain speculation, personal opinion, and adult comedy. It is not advice and is solely for entertainment and informational purposes.

Wolfgang’s Element, Class, Special Skills, & Talents

Wolfgang’s core data:

Element: Holy (Yellow)

Class: Fighter

Mana Speed: Average

Family Bonus: Wolf ~ 2/3 Wolf Heroes get a 35% / 50% chance to make a cast buff undispellable

Special Skills (Gauntlet): 1. Deals 250% damage to all enemies. 2. The caster reduces all received damage by -50% for 4 turns (for himself). 3. After 4 turns, the caster boosts the health of all allies by 600 HP.

Talent: Revive ~ +30% chance to revive with 1 HP after a fatal attack. The revive is applied at the end of the turn.

Is Wolfgang worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

Wolfgang’s like a Magic Hero but without the bother of having to manage two separate mana speeds. -He wraps it all up in one. In fact, Wolfgang and Milena have a lot in common.

Wolfgang’s Special (Gauntlet)

Wolfgang does two separate jobs; he attacks and heals.

I wanted to see how he compares with other Heroes for each skill. So first, let’s start with Attack.

Here’s a table comparing Wolfgang with other Heroes who inflict damage to all enemies (on or near an Average mana speed):

HeroMana SpeedDamageSecondary
WolfgangAverageDeals 250% damage to all enemiesReduces damage received by -50% for 4 turns (for himself), & heals all allies
KillhareAverageDeals 300% damage to all enemiesAll allies get -20% defense
MilenaMagic Charge x2Deals 420% damage to all enemiesDispels buff from enemies
UrsenaAverageDeals 130% damage to all enemiesDeals 260% damage if the target has more than 50% health remaining, & Holy Status effects and damage are reflected back
CristobalMagic Charge x2Deals 215% damage to all enemiesDeals 430% damage if the target has more than 50% health remaining – Wolfgang compared with other hitters

Wolfgang’s 250% damage against all enemies is solid; only 50% less than Killhare!

Here’s how his Special Skill actually works:

  • First, he’ll attack all enemies,
  • Then protect himself (by reducing all damage he receives by 50%),
  • Then finally (after 4 turns) he’ll heal the entire ally squad for 600 HP.

There’s not much more to say about the damage aspect of his Special Skill; it’s not crazy strong, but it’s definitely respectable.

So how well does he heal?

Wolfgang – Empires and Puzzles

HeroMana SpeedHealing %Secondary Skill
WolfgangAverageAfter 4 turns, the caster boosts the health of all allies by 600 HPDeals 250% damage to all enemies & reduces damage received by -50% for 4 turns (for himself)
ZulagAverageCaster and NB regenerate 612 HP over 4 turnsCaster and nearby get +46% defense for 4 turns, caster & NB get +74% defense against Special Skills for 4 turns
Alexandrine Average18% for ALLRecovers +3% for every Ice Shield on the board (Up to 42%), +54% critical chance or -47% accuracy.
ArielAverage40% for ALLDispels status ailments from allies. All allies get +24% mana generation for 4 turns.
DelilahAverage33% for ALLSummons a Minion for each ally.
Director ZuriAverage42% for ALLRecovers 65% Health for the Ally with the lowest remaining HP, Summons a Clown Minion for each ally (15% HP and 22% attack), & Cleanses status ailments from all allies
XnolphodAverage32% for ALLIncreases the mana of all allies by 20% & decent tile shifting for mana – Comparing Wolfgang

How does Wolfgang’s 600 HP of healing translate, when compared to a Hero with 42% healing? -Lady of the Lake for example?

Well, in my quick tests, Lady (who has a Slow mana speed) provided between 650 to 730 HP recovery across the board.

The honourable Costumed Rigard (Ave), provides 609 HP over 3 turns. While the Healer of the Moment, Prof. Lidenbrock (Slow) provides 800 HP combined.

As you can see, 600 HP is a good bit of healing.

The thing to note with Wolfgang’s healing is that it occurs after 4 turns. -Just like a TV Set purchased on Layaway; the payment comes down the road.

To my mind, that isn’t a problem because Wolfgang does enough damage not to be considered your only healer.

I’d view his healing as a secondary bonus.

…When it arrives, it arrives. There’s no rush here.

In fact, Wolfgang offers his body as a barrier, to ease your discomfort while you wait, reducing all damage inflicted on him, by -50%.

There’s no getting around it -Wolfgang’s a walking, talking, screaming, Tank.

In fact, at Average mana speed, you could play him just about anywhere. But it makes sense to put him in front of tiles.

The Wolf Family Bonus (Empires & Puzzles)

Wolfgang is in the Wolf Family: That means he has a chance to make his buff undispellable.

And that’s awesome. But, he’ll need 2 other Heroes from the same family to get that chance.

Wolfgang – Empires and Puzzles Clash Of Knights

My final thoughts:

A couple of days ago I reviewed Ludwig. And for me, Ludwig is the most powerful of the new Clash Of Knights Heroes.

However, just consider how strong this group is, that Wolfgang could be viewed as second best.

Wolf is a leader, a Healer, and a confidant. He’s the type of Hero enemies hate, and allies want to be with.

Old Cynic’s Hero Grade: Deity★★

  1. These are some new monsters being released… I don’t even want to think about facing a team with Wolfgang, Ludwig and odin/frigga…

  2. I am not sure he makes a great tank unless paired with other event heroes. Both the heal and the damage reduction can be dispelled, basically making him a 250 hit all only. Sabina would give him absolute fits. Healing his damage and eliminating both his heal and damage reduction. Far too common of a counter to be a great tank.

    1. Welcome, well to play the advocate I’d say, his Wolf family bonus makes it only dispellable 50% of the time. Also, your defence for him is situational and requires the player to have a Dispell hero in their line-up.

That said, it’s fair enough really. I offer Tank as an idea due to some feedback I read from Beta; a reference to how difficult he was to get rid off. Add to that, the -50% damage, alongside his actual skills -and he might be wasted Out-of-the-Fray. Still, it’s not a given, just an idea. It maybe that he’s much better suited to Flank or Wing.

      Where do you place him?

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Great! For example if Emilio and Wolfgang are in defense team and Emilio fire up first then wolfgang – will attacker dispell (like Sonya) dispell Wolfgang BUFF? Emilio gives status ailments immunity. Hmmm?

    1. Hi John, sorry I don’t know as I’ve not had a chance to play with/against him. I imagine it would just Dispell all, if his family bonus hasn’t been triggered. Happy to be corrected by anyone with the answer.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Hi, I appreciate your hard work.
One question about Wolfgang, if he fires special again before the healing does it cancel the original countdown?

      1. Hi… I got Wolfgang in a 10x pull… his healing keeps the 1st countdown… not being reset… but the damage reduction will be reset

  5. Just checked it myself on my account. Healing goes off after 4 turns. If special is fired again before the heal the original heal goes off but there’s not a second one. Hope that makes sense. It doesn’t reset it but you get the first heal. So there’s a choice. Wait 1 or 2 turns to fire for a second heal or fire special again.

Also the healing is boosted above full heal up to 600 above. I tried firing his special at different times within the 4 turns and even back to back. Thinking that’s where the developers could nerf/boost him by changing the details of when the heal happens.

  6. On war equalizer he’ll never get a heal. And there’s always a counter for everything in the game but I think he’s going to be very popular. Just my opinion. Even Ludwig is not perfect and can be copied by Lord Loki at average speed. Wish I could bring him up quick but too many projects so he’ll sit at 3/70 for a bit

    1. Congrats Fledger, agreed -that’s what makes the game work. Ludwig might require a shift in strategy & team to make the most of, whereas Wolfgang/Quenell seem to be Plug-and-Play. Throw Ludwig over here and I’ll focus all my attention on him 😉

  7. You’re welcome. One last observation. Paired with Brynhild against Sabina his buffs are undispelable for 3 turns. Timing is tricky but its an option on offense. Tried it against an alliance mate and there might be other possibilities.

  8. Hi OldCynic,

i had the extreme luck of pulling it in only 3 try, and i like it a lot!

Hoping to pick Hanitra in December, cuz i already have Uraeus, and i can extend Element Link to all team heroes (thx to 2021 family bonus).

Just one question: how to emblem it??? Thx : )

    1. Hey Gixu Welcome! Congrats! I emblem all… All my heroes the same way. I don’t follow paths provided elsewhere, I want my heroes to last as long as possible. But, I’m sure there are other sources for a more specific course.

Thanks for visiting and sharing tho, I appreciate it!

  9. After some month in using Wolfgang, i think he’ll be always a first choice… AOE damage, survivalism, overheal, all in one!
I also LB him, so he’s stronger now… just waiting to max/emblem Ferant for Wolf family bonus!!!

  10. Could you share what emblem path you would go with the Wolf, my alliance mate went attack health, saying he’s def is high. I’m still split about it.

    1. Hi Battousai, I take every hero the Health/Defense path, regardless. I wrote about it here.

It’s just my personal preference, but it’s worth getting lots of views and coming to your own formula.

      Thanks for reading!
