How Good is Motega? Empires and Puzzles Magic Review

Screenshot of Motega Hero Card from Empires and Puzzles

Motega is a Legendary Hero from the Empires and Puzzles event, Tower Of Magic. And in my view, he’s the main attraction, -a Summoner who can call both Minions & Fiends.

If you read my earlier post about the new Tower Of Magic, you’ll already know that these new Heroes enjoy 2 separate Specials. The first is at a near equivalent to VERY FAST mana speed, while the second is close to SLOW.

And between his two Specials, Motega is very well balanced. Let’s take a closer look…

Motega’s Element, Class, Special Skills, Passives & Talents

Here’s his info:

Element: Holy (Yellow)

Class: Cleric

Mana Speed: Magic

Special Skills Tier-1: 1) Summons a Butterfly Minion for each ally with 14% HP and 20% attack inherited from the caster. 2) Each hit from a Butterfly minion gives the target the following status ailment: All damage the target receives is increased by +20% for 3 turns.

Special Skills Tier-2: 1) Summons a Butterfly Fiend for all enemies. The Fiend damages the enemy with 43% attack every turn. 2) The Butterfly Fiend absorbs healing and disappears when it has absorbed health equal to 50% of its owner’s max health. 3) The Butterfly Fiend gives -50% accuracy for its owner for as long as the owner has Butterfly Fiends. Chance to miss also applies to offensive Special Skills. This effect can’t be cleansed.

Passive: HEAL ON CHARGE ~ On T1 charge Special Skill, this Hero has a 50% chance to recover 15% health for all allies. On T2 charge, this Hero has a 100% chance to recover 15% health for all allies.

Talent: MANASHIELD ~ +35% chance to resist any negative mana status effects or effects that prevent the use of Special Skills.

Is Motega worth Levelling? (Empires and Puzzles)

Definitely. I’d love to have Motega on my roster and here’s why:

Motega’s Tier-1 Special (Very Fast)

First, we have the Butterfly Minion, one created for every ally. -Sure, it’s only got 14% HP, but look at the attack (20%), and the interesting additional damage it will cause (+20%).

That additional damage sounds like it will come from any source, ideal for a quick Sniper to take advantage of.

So, even though Motega’s first-tier Special may appear a little weak, it actually has great potential to be used as an offensive force.

On top of that, it offers a little extra protection, in the opening salvos of battle.

And let’s not forget, that’s a VERY FAST Special.

Here’s a chart, comparing Motega’s first-tier Special with other FAST or VERY FAST Minion summoners in Empires and Puzzles:

HeroMana SpeedDamage/OtherMinion HealthMinion Attack
Motega
Tier-1
Very FastTarget receives +20% increased damage for 2 turns 14% 20%
BeraFastTarget receives 186 poison damage over 3 turns & can’t receive new Minions20%20%
FreyaFastAllies receive +30% Defense for 4 turns20%20%
Motega compared to similar Heroes

Motega’s Butterfly Minions may be a viable option at the start of battle, especially if you have another Hero (or tiles) ready to take advantage of the extra +20% damage.

I look forward to seeing if there’s any value in firing off the Tier-1 Special repeatedly and ignoring the Tier-2 Special altogether. And I guess with anybody else you might consider it, but maybe not with Motega…

Because his Tier-2 is utterly discouraging to the opposition.

Motega’s Tier-2 Special (Slow) Empires and Puzzles

Before we even look at this Special, let’s review that Passive (which can now be accessed with either Tier-1 or Tier-2 activation): A chance to recover 15% health for all allies.

For the record, this ability was buffed, then later nerfed, by the developers.

Still, what we’re left with is a great Passive; 15% healing to all allies.

On to his actual Tier-2 Special: His Fiends.

Fiends have become a major source of annoyance since their introduction (specifically when one’s attached to your Hero’s face), but Motega is going to take that to a whole new level. See, his Fiends inflict -50% accuracy on their owners, which also affects the owner’s Special skills.

… Crippling for the opposition, especially as it can’t be Cleansed. Because it’s the Fiend causing the ailment, not an infliction.

I mean, Justice will inflict -40% accuracy for 4 turns. Whereas, this will inflict -50% for the life of the Fiend. . . Which may be the life of your Hero, if it gets its way.

Here’s how it stacks up against similar Fiends in Empires and Puzzles:

HeroMana SpeedDamage/OtherFiend DamageHealing Absorbed by Fiend
Motega
Tier-2
Slow -50% accuracy to Owner 43% 50%
SenanSlow275% damage to ALL45%30%
ElizabethAverage175% damage to ALL
Fiend gives -24% mana generation for life of Fiend
43%28%
HannahFast215% damage to Target & NB
Fiend gives -20% attack for life of Fiend
43%20%
Motega compared to similar Heroes

As we can see, Motega’s Fiend is up there with the best. And its -50% accuracy is a powerful and subduing force.

These goblins are going to be hard to deal with, but if Motega’s on your side and manages to fire off? It’ll be like tying one of your opponent’s hands behind their back and ringing the bell.

Motega – Empires and Puzzles Tower Of Magic

My final thoughts:

The idea (“business plan”) with Empires and Puzzles is to create new, and more powerful, Heroes. And I don’t have a problem with it, because it keeps the developers motivated and the game evolving. Sure, I want all the best Heroes, but it is what it is.

This time, with the Magic Heroes, the developers have merged two Heroes into one -and in my view, Motega is the #1 pick.

Fact is, there are currently no Fiend Removers in the game, so it’s a big problem if Motega fires off his Tier-2. So remember your healer, or get used to swinging and hitting nothing but fresh air.

UPDATE:-

While I don’t have Motega, I’ve been following Buzrig on YouTube, who was fortunate enough to pull him a few days ago. Buzrig has since fully levelled Motega and attached emblems. Today he released a test drive, running Motega against a Titan, and taking him on some Raids:

Old Cynic’s Hero Grade: Deity★★

This Hero was subsequently Buffed or Nerfed by the developers. Details have been updated to reflect the changes.

What are your thoughts? Did I get it wrong or miss something? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I just got him this morning, and I was looking for advices. Now, I’m convinced he is a good hero, and I will give him a try in my defensive team instead of Lidenbrock. Can’t wait to max him (I’ve got 12 darts so this won’t be a problem).

  2. The more I use Motega, the more I find I just have to use him in most situations. He’s just so useful with his minions tanking damage, adding increased damage. His tier 2 skill feels OP to me, and don’t forget it can also heal all non-holy allies due to his passive. I’ve also recently ascended Mica and am trying him out too. I plan on limit breaking Motega, but want to give Mica a fair shot before pulling the trigger.
