Legends Of Kalevala is a new Empires and Puzzles Seasonal Event. Taking its inspiration from epic mythology, it will introduce a host of awesome new heroes with a distinctly Finnish flair.

Controversially, Kalevala Day is actually celebrated on the 28th of February… so…

In this guide, you’ll find details of the event, a table with all the Stage-Bosses, and an initial breakdown of all the new heroes.

Before we start, please support me by sharing a link to this post, it really helps! Thank you!

Legends Of Kalevala | Empires and Puzzles

Legends of Kalevala is an Empires and Puzzles Seasonal Event, due to make its first appearance on Monday 20th June 2022, and run until Monday 18th July 2022.

There are 10 new heroes scheduled for release; 6 Legendary, 2 Epic, and 2 Rare.

Also, as it’s a Seasonal Event, Epic Hero Tokens can be used at the Summoning Portal!

Special Gameplay Rules for Legends Of Kalevala (Empires and Puzzles)

Legends of Kalevala consists of three difficulty modes: Rare, Epic, and Legendary, with 20 Stages in each (60 Stages in total).

Screenshot of Legends Of Kalevala Event in Map

These need to be completed in order (starting from Rare), to unlock the next difficulty mode.

There are also restrictions on the maximum level of heroes and troops you can take to battle for each mode:

  • 3-Star Heroes and 2-Star Troops for Rare,
  • 4-Star Heroes and 3-Star Troops for Epic, and
  • 5-Star Heroes and 4-Star Troops for Legendary.

Legends of Kalevala also has a new special effect: Puuko Bombs.

Puuko Bombs (Kalevala Seasonal Event)

Puuko Bombs appear in one of the 5 elemental colours, randomly occupying a tile space. These contain a counter, starting from 3, counting down the number of moves made.

If the counter runs out, the Puuko Bomb will explode and deal damage to your team.

So, match the bombs with tiles of the same colour, to remove them from the board, before the counter runs out!

Matching Puuko Bombs will build up a special Puuko Storm feature, which means you can turn the bombs against your enemy.

Puuko Storm:

  • All enemies receive damage equal to 15% of their max health
  • All enemies get -30% defence for 3 turns

Make 5 Puuko Bomb matches to activate the Puuko Storm.

Legends Of Kalevala Seasonal Event Offers (Empires and Puzzles)

As this is another 28-day seasonal event, we can expect to see the usual calendar of Special Offers popping back again.

(Updated) And, it is so:

A new deal is unlocked each day, and there’s a free gift on Sundays.

Legends Of Kalevala Summoning Portal

The Legends Of Kalevala Summoning Portal will replace the regular Epic Hero Portal, but will still include all the Classic Season 1 heroes.

This will allow you to use Golden Epic Hero Tokens to try your chances at pulling one of the brand new Legends Of Kalevala heroes.

You’ll be able to earn an Epic Hero Token by completing Stage 20 in Epic mode, and Stage 15 in Legendary mode, of the Legends of Kalevala event.

You can also purchase pulls at 300 gems for 1 pull, or 2600 gems for 10.

As Legends Of Kalevala spans over 2 months, you’ll also have a chance of grabbing the current Hero of the Month, Arfanias, or July’s HotM, Klaern.

Legends Of Kalevala Family Bonus (Empires and Puzzles)

All Kalevala heroes share the same Kalevala Family Bonus and the same Passive Skill:

Kalevala Family Bonus

Family Bonus (for 1/2/3 heroes): Receive -10%/-25%/-40% less damage from the Special Skills of the stronger element.

Kalevala Passive Skill

Power of Sisu: When this character starts a turn with low health for the first time during a battle, they recover 15% health and receive 15% mana.

OC’s view: The headliner is clearly that 15% mana boost on low health, and it feels great when it happens. But, look at that -40% less damage on Specials from the stronger element…. Tanky… a bit?

All Heroes in Legends Of Kalevala (Empires and Puzzles)

I hope to review a few of these heroes over the coming months, where I’ll also be able to research and consider them in much more detail. But for now, let’s see what we’ve got:

5-Star Legendary heroes: Legends Of Kalevala (Empires and Puzzles)

There are six new 5-Star Heroes in the Kalevala Family.

Aino (Empires and Puzzles)

Aino Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Aino: Ice, Cleric, Average
Summer Carol: 1. Cleanses status ailments from all allies. 2. Recovers 40% health for all allies. 3. All enemies get -24% mana generation for 4 turns. On Nature characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Aino is a Classic healer in the traditional sense. Like a rose in sunset…. Sorry, I gotta take this more seriously.

Aino possesses many of the ‘classic’ skills we all want from a solid healer but also has a nasty sting in the tail for your enemies (-24% mana generation).

She might not overwhelm the senses, but she will definitely make an impact.

The Cleanse is in the right place (1st), the healing is substantial (40%), and slowing of all enemies gives you that little bit of extra time.

Aino has the potential of tilting the battle in your favour. -Especially, if it’s off the back of her Passive (15% mana boost)!

Yes, Aino is a great hero.

Iku-Turso (Empires and Puzzles)

Iku-Turso Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Iku-Turso: Nature, Druid, Fast
Dreaded Waters: 1. Deals 280% damage to the target and nearby enemies. 2. Target and nearby enemies receive 240 water damage over 3 turns. On Fire characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer. 3. The caster steals 51% of healing applied to the target and nearby enemies for 3 turns. On Fire characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: This frog’s hit is decent and the healing is a nice touch. As for the water damage? It’s more like an Ice-Bucket-Challenge (there’s a Wiki for that!).

Costumed Elkanen is quite similar, in that he also steals healing in this way, so let’s compare the two:

HeroMana SpeedStrikeHealing
Iku-Turso
Fast (8 tiles)Deals 280% damage to the target and nearby enemiesThe caster steals 51% of healing applied to the target and nearby enemies for 3 turns. This effect can’t be cleansed on Fire.
Costumed ElkanenFast (8 tiles)Deals 270% damage to the target and nearby enemiesThe caster steals 40% of healing applied to the target and nearby enemies for 3 turns.
OldCynic.com – Iku-Turso Vs. Costumed Elkanen

Not a bad hero at all, but not the star attraction.

Ilmarinen (Empires and Puzzles)

Ilmarinen Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Ilmarinen: Fire, Fighter, Slow
Forged in Fire: 1. Reduces the mana of all Ice enemies by 40%. Reduces the mana of all other enemies by 20%. 2. All enemies share received damage with each other for 4 turns. On Ice characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer. 3. All enemies get -56% defense for 4 turns. On Ice characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Ilmarinen doesn’t do enough to excite me.

Sure, the mana reduction is nice, but after a Slow charge, it’s simply not enough.

The -56% defense is a high number, but it’s only uncleansable against Ice heroes.

He’s a decent hero, and if surrounded by the Mana-Gods, may even look impressive, but in isolation, there’s nothing super compelling here.

If you’re F2P/C2P and you don’t already have a strong defense down hero, Ilmarinen might be the perfect fit for you.

Kullervo (Empires and Puzzles)

Kullervo Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Kullervo: Holy, Rogue, Average
Heirloom Dagger: 1. Deals 300% damage to the target. 2. Deals 470% damage to a random different enemy. 3. Enemies hit automatically cast Mindless Attack on a random ally when mana is full at the start of the turn during 3 turns. On Dark characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Kullervo’s gonna be so useful on Offense. Forget the huge amount of damage he inflicts for a moment, and think about that Mindless Attack.

Imagine X-o-pod is about to fire off and you target him for the dozy-doe. And then Quenell gets happy slapped, too?

It’s just such a proficient way of dealing with some numpty getting ready to spoil your fun…. No, no, no… Put your little wand away Xnolphod*, not today, pal.

We also have all that damage; 300% to the target and a whopping 470% to a random enemy.

Kullervo is made of absolute top-end, Grade-A stuff.

(*I swear that’s not a euphemism, -it’s not that type of show folks).

Want more Kullervo? Read his full review here.

Louhi (Empires and Puzzles)

Louhi Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Louhi: Dark, Monk, Average
Feather Tempest: 1. Dispels buffs from all enemies. 2. Deals 250% damage to all enemies. 3. All enemies get -24% defense for 4 turns. On Holy characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: I was fortunate enough to help test these heroes in Beta, and Louhi was my personal favourite.

When she fires off, she does more than enough to change the tide of a battle.

First Dispelling all enemies, then dealing a reasonable amount of damage, and finally, inflicting -24% defense.

Yes, the Defense-down comes after the hit, but it’s still a one-button-press game changer.

I hate to harp on about C.Roc, but he does -44% defense on Average. Plus, he’ll give you the Dispel, and in exchange for the strike, he gives you DOT with Sand damage.

Just an interesting comparison.

Either way, Roc is a bad bird and Louhi’s a star.

Vainamoinen (Empires and Puzzles)

Vainamoinen Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Vainamoinen: Nature, Sorcerer, Fast
Song of Morass: 1. Deals 270% damage to the target and nearby. 2. All enemies get -30% accuracy for 3 turns. Chance to miss also applies to Special Skills. On Fire characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Vainamoinen’s hit is solid enough, but at 270%, it isn’t enough to drop the mic. And, his secondary just doesn’t cut it for me.

When I play Bai Yeong, I get hit way more than I feel I should (with his -75% accuracy triggered), and here goes Vainamoinen flexing -30% 🙄.

I suspect I’ll still be slapped left, right, and centre, all day long and twice on Sundays, when this ‘ailment’ is cast.

Alright, maybe I’m underplaying it. -We’ll have to wait and see how it feels in battle to properly judge.

Still, a modern hero with a strong right fist, just not enough on the backhand to pop the champagne cork. Wow, 3 analogies in 1 sentence… you should’ve heard my personalized wedding vows, -my wife must’ve thought I was an astronaut.

4-Star Epic heroes: Legends Of Kalevala (Empires and Puzzles)

There are two 4-Star Heroes in Kalevala Family.

Lemminkainen (Empires and Puzzles)

Lemminkainen Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Lemminkainen: Fire, Barbarian, Average
Flaming Sword: 1. Deals 285% damage to the target and minor damage to nearby. 2. The target and nearby enemies receive 196 Burn damage over 4 turns. On Ice characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Lemminkainen is a damage dealer. Nothing crazy, and we should note, the minor damage to nearby enemies.

For ref, Tiburtus does 295% damage to the target and minor damage to nearby enemies on an Average, too. So, nothing crazy here.

Add to that some damage over time (DOT), and it’s a bit, “meh”. No problem.

In fact, good, because it means they won’t have to nerf him in 3 months 😄.

Mielikki (Empires and Puzzles)

Mielikki Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Mielikki: Nature, Druid, Average
Sprite Ballard: 1. Summons a Sprite of the Forest Minion for all allies with 15% HP and 10% attack inherited from the caster. 2. The Sprite of the Forest Minion gives +20% mana generation for its owner for as long as they have the Sprite of the Forest Minions. This effect can’t be dispelled. 3. All enemies get -24% attack for 4 turns. On Fire characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: The potential is definitely there.

The entire fondue is reliant on keeping those minions alive, and if you can, you’ll get an extra +20% mana generation.

But only 15% minion HP… –Lady of the Lake styley.

Lots of ‘ifs and buts’ with Mielikki.

On the surface, it looks great, but anyone with an effective minion solution won’t care a single iota about what Mielikki does.

And when you think about it, Ariel gives you +24% mana gen over 4 turns as part of her Special.

The only difference here is that it’s attached to minions and is undispellable.

Of course, we’re comparing Mielikki with an elite 5-Star hero! But, this is a serious business, probing the potential of a new 4-Star hero.

I can’t help but think there are some strong synergy options out there, waiting for Mielikki. But in isolation, I’m not blown away.

3-Star Rare heroes: Legends Of Kalevala (Empires and Puzzles)

There are two new 3-Star Heroes in Kalevala Family.

Joukahainen (Empires and Puzzles)

Joukahainen Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Joukahainen: Ice, Monk, Average
Arrows of Fury: 1. Dispels buffs from all enemies. 2. Deals 165% damage to all enemies. 3. All enemies are immune to new status buffs for 4 turns. On Nature characters, This effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: There’s a ‘Status Effects’ war being waged in the 3-Star realm.

And, it all boils down to Treevil, who inflicts some next-level chaos on all enemies.

It seems (to me), that instead of nerfing the monster, who continues to dominate 3-Star tourneys, the developers are simply introducing new heroes to counter him (Faiez anyone?).

Now, it seems (to me), that we have a hero designed to counter the strong counter; Joukahainen.

And so, the dragon chases its tail.

Mind you, I don’t have a problem with all this, -just saying what I’m seeing.

Para (Empires and Puzzles)

Para Empires and Puzzles Hero Card

Para: Dark, Rogue, Average
Familiar Witchcraft: 1. Recovers 32% health for all allies. 2. All enemies get -24% attack for 4 turns. On Holy characters, this effect can’t be cleansed and lasts 2 turns longer.

OC: Not too much going on here with Para.

32% healing for all isn’t anything earth-shattering. Frosty gives us the same (also Average), and so does Helo, and so does Aderyn.

So, it’s just the -24% attack we’re here for. Nice that it’s uncleansable on Holy, but still not justification for adding any more words to the end of this already monster post!

Trees in the background with words, Legends Of Kalevala

Legends Of Kalevala – Empires and Puzzles Guide

There we have it, another one in the bag.

More words on this page than I’ve ever submitted to my English teacher.

Of note:

  • Even though I didn’t focus on it much, the Family bonus and Passives associated with these heroes are phenomenal.
  • Also, the extended torture for the ‘Strong Element’ in their Specials, has a whole heap of potential attached to it.

I hope you enjoyed the post and, thank you for reading!

  1. These’s heroes I think are awesome and somehow not so overkill in terms of skills but still highly desirable. I also noticed that these guys would be great for tourneys for the extra 2 turns ailments against elements they are weak against. For example, No ice Heroes, people would mainly put fire heroes in defenses. You can maybe use green kalevala heroes to inflict ailments and thus applying the extra 2 turns ailments.

  2. Hi Cynic, great reviews! Please note that Costume Elkanen does 270% damage to target and nearby, not 245%. Cheers! Jackie

  3. Nice! Thank you for the overview
Some interesting things here. Lots of uncleansables, so better get your resist or other defences ready. My Garnet will be working overtime.

Ilmarinen and Kullervo looks especially good, together with Louhi
Also like another 4* minion-maker, as there are so few of those

  4. I haven´t looked at the 5 star heroes, as I never do enough pulls to get the one I want anyway, I just get what I get, if I get lucky to pull one and take it from there.
I am mainly interested in 3 and 4 star heroes and those seem to be rather well average. We´re so spoiled by OP heroes that non-OP heroes become uninteresting. The green 4 star seems interesting, but if he even get´s high enough up the leveling queue I am not sure, the red one is most definitely not getting high on that list.
The 3 stars well, the healer is a nice choice for people that don´t have Aderyn, but I do and he´s not a significant upgrade. The blue, average speed, hit all dispeller, has the highest chances to get used on occasion, so I think I will pull until I get him and then stop summoning and instead keep my tokens for Halloween/Christmas…

  5. Vain drops the accuracy of ALL heroes which is way more effective in my mind than Bai because having a ehole team that misses more often is more useful. I think hes being underestimated a lot actually.

  6. Mielikki has great synergy with Gargoyles as their stone skin servers a perfect protection for her minions.

  7. Do you think adding screenshots of the loot per tier would help add some more flare to this article and be useful for next one they have?

  8. I have Aino at 3/70 and am considering maxing her to use in place of Ariel normal. I would appreciate your thoughts about pros and cons, please

    1. Hahaha, you can’t put that on my shoulders. I don’t want you to be upset about using your mats 😁

OK, as you know they’re both very similar, but the unique nature of their secondaries makes them unique enough to have both on the roster.

The order of events is correct with Aino and the -24% mana infliction is more in line with my playing style (very defensive). So personality, I’d prefer to have Aino.

Of course, we’re talking two top healers, it’s just my 2p, and please get views from other sources.

      Hope it helps!
