Klaern Empires and Puzzles HotM July 22
Klaern is the July 2022 Empires and Puzzles Hero Of The Month (HotM), and he’s simply not up to par.
Klaern is so p*ss poor, I actually held this review back for fear they’d upgrade him before release.
But the good news for me is, I can go ahead and hit publish.
Bad news for you? This is one sorry bag of pixels!

Klaern’s Stats and Special Skills (Hailstorm)
Key Facts: Ice (Blue), Slow, Sorcerer, Legends 2022
Special Skills (Hailstorm): 1. Deals 240% damage to all. 2. All enemies receive 205 Water damage over 5 turns. The caster absorbs 25% of dealt damage as health. 3. [Element Link] All Ice allies get 10% defense for 4 turns, which can’t be dispelled.
Passive: 1. Resist Mana Reduction 2. Resist Special Skill Blocking
Talent: DELAY ~ +15% chance to drop the mana generation of the enemy by -50% for 2 turns after dealing damage. The effect is applied at the end of the turn.
Legends 2022 Family Bonus: 1/2/3 Heroes: +10%/+15%/+20% attack. Bonus for 2+ Heroes: Element Link affects all allies.
How Good is Klaern? (Empires and Puzzles)
I can’t lie to you, Klaern is seriously underwhelming; he’s Slow, doesn’t hit for much, and doesn’t even have a special trick up his sleeve.
Well, he does have one endearing quality, one saving grace, one area of excellence;
His Passives: ① A resistance to mana reduction and ② skill blocking.
Klaern’s Passives are so badass, that you’d almost forgive the rest of his sorry build. With them, he has the constitution of a German Shepherd. He’s curious, somewhat self-assured, and eager to pursue those who would threaten his pack.
All the qualities you want in a hero.
Only problem is, when Klaern actually catches your would-be assailant, instead of laying the smack-down, he gets to playing Patacake.
It’s not his fault, he was made that way!
How Bad is Klaern? (Empires and Puzzles)
Klaern is pitifully weak.
He’s so bad, I dusted off my Meek rating just for him.
He’s sooo bad, Quintus is said to have regained a little swagger about himself.
He’s soooooo bad, there are rumours Mother North has flat out refused to revive him.
But, but, but!…
In truth, it really makes my job easier.
See, normally, a new HotM will try to reside in a little sweet spot between Underpowered and Just Useful Enough. -The space between Warrior and Archangel.
Klaern on the other hand, firmly resides in the useless category.
Let’s quickly qualify that statement, tho. Here’s Klaern versus some elite, and some not-so-elite, opposition…
Klaern Vs. Empires & Puzzles
This is based on the same table used for Goseck (who just received a much-needed buff):

Klaern’s outgunned, underpowered, and pretty pointless.
But what if you’re a new player, maybe a F2P, and you’ve got to make the most outta Klaern?
Here’s what I’d do:
How to Use Klaern?
First thing you wanna do is lock his Hero Card, like so:
Now, you wanna leave his card until either:
- The developers buff him, or
- —
OK, I kid. Let’s go…
Nope, false start.
This guy is so awesomely poor, I can’t even formulate a plan of action for him.
At best, use him if you need to Stack a team. -So, if you’re already playing 2 or 3 Ice heroes and need another for the combined effect… then, holla at Klaern.
Or, say all of your 4-Stars have unionized and they’re threatening to strike. Under that level of duress, no one could blame you for using Klaern, right?
Or-or, say it’s the end of the world and you’re in a bunker and the nukes have all been fired and you’re thinking, ‘f*#k it, let’s see’. -In that extreme scenario, with the end of all that is good, and all that is bad, ever encroaching on your peripheral vision… In that dire moment of desperation, if you wanna get frisky, crack on.
And where do you put him? I’d stick him out on the Wing. Outta harm’s way. -With a helmet and a rabbit’s foot.

My final thoughts:
Not everybody gets to be the star, to live that glamorous lifestyle, to wake up all cheerful and whatnot. Most days I wake up feeling groggy as f*#k…
And that’s Klaern for you.
But I’d argue that we need heroes like Klaern, or what’s the point? We need bad heroes to balance out the ‘good’.
In the last 3 months we’ve had some decent HotMs:
So Klaern’s a little weak.
It’s just the way it goes.
That said, I don’t want him (let’s not get all noble about it).
But if you do happen to pull this guy (and don’t wanna level him), please don’t feed him! Instead, save him for the Soul Exchange and let his life have some meaning!

Is this hero’s Special capable of/likely to change the outcome of a battle? No.

I woke up all excited. The last few HOTMs have all been a serious cut above the average dross they print for us. My son and I reached for the mobile with high expectations, a little hope for a good blue and a scorching cup of tea each ready to clink cups over another team member for the end of year 2022 HOTM team with kick ass buffs to share amongst them.
We opened the card and thought what the holy feck is this shagpile of cat hair? It’s put me off doing some pulls this month… Ludwig I’m talking to you buddy, or your mate Wolfie, or his girlfriend Quennell. Bag of spanners is Klaern. I’d rather have a pinch from my 6yr old daughter.

Now you have me worried! Having missed out on Arfanias (who I wanted) I am now afraid I will pull this clown! It will be Hero Academy for re-training if I do get him.
Wasn’t Zagrog a recent HOTM? I find him pretty useful and fun to use.

Pulled him TWICE now. Could have with last months HoTM but no, instead I get this clown twice!!
He’s very easy to pull, I pulled him in the costume event for July and I used the costume keys to pull him in a one off pull that lead to a bonus draw and voilà… he’s there

Hahaha -I do try to find the best in all heroes, but I really struggled with Klaern!
He is good for soul exhange. But, thats it. He is the reason that I decided to lay back for July with no pulls except for using the token I already have in my inventory.
Oh, HA 10 too! 😁 He seems so weak in todays game but maybe new players will find a spot for him.
Yeah he is one of the worst HOTM I’ve seen in a while. To be slow mana, his damage has to be 300% to all or more! The water damage has to be higher also, (without the use of emblems) and probably needs to raise the HP gained from the damage to about 50% instead of 25%. The HP gain is too low to really punish an opponent effectively. I mean, opponents will not fear this HOTM. He’s not someone I feel id need to eliminate right away in order to have success defeating a team. He will have to be buffed several times to remedy all his short comings. (And I’m only speaking about facing him on defense, because who in their right mind would take this HOTM on offense? 🤷🏾♂️

I won’t be doing any pulls this month…this HOTM is just trash next months looks really good as long as they don’t change him.
He is sooo bad, right? I’m sure someone will need him… maybe.
ok, I’ll give it a shot.. eh, in a very fast tournament he is not slow, so yeah. His damage to all is up to par with the purple lizard guy and the likes of divana who only hits three (although with a vastly superior second special).. and..eh.. come on… he will get a costume in 2026 or something…. Everybody is going to underestimate him! There is absolutely no pain in replacing 20 of him for one deity in the soul exchange, which for someone with hoarding tendencies is an absolute pain. Sorry but I only see good things 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I have to admit, when I first reviewed his card I Initially, thought his passives are great, damage disappointing, but his 10% health boost, per hit enemy, for 5 turns isn’t bad. But let’s face it, such a hero would have to be limit broken and given 19-20 emblems. But with his slow speed he’d probably only get his underwhelming damage off once. So honestly, he’s likely only viable if you only have one or two blue 5 stars and are free/very cheap to play. With a roster of faster blue heroes would I give scopes to Klaern over Theobald, nope! He’d ride the pine alongside Insarnia, who I’d insert into the lineup before him.

Smh, I got him on July 1 st with one pull from alliance quest summons. Why can’t I have such luck when Kara was hotm? I guess I’ll save him for SE or ha 10

He’s definitely getting a buff in about 100 years after he will
be fed to SE a millionth times, so you better watch out! But
we’ve seen some terrible hotms
– of course I was lucky
enough to get them and even lvl them up cos I didn’t have
anything else (elradir etc and yes even reuben
– read your
review – I still can’t find use for him tbh if I play mono and face
any team at all even S1 or even epics I will die if the boards get
“random” so yes even Reuben can kill me. But with at least avg
boards most hotms these days are useless); and of course I
was lucky enough to pull this #2 on the very first day because
if there’s a sh*tty hotm out there you better make sure I’ll get
him.
Hotms these days are bascially (almost solely) for f2p.
With that said, I spend from t2t and I do have some recent
decent hotms like kara or hanitra. I have Raffaele and Glenda
I use both every day on mono pup raids. Also Uraeus and the
rest is prob not worth mentioning. I know you would disagree
because I read your reviews, but on offense even Chakk or
Viscaro are so slow and so weak that they will die 100x before
they fire. On offense Reuben Elradir Yang Mai (quite good on
defense) Balbar Zulag (talking about worst hotms..) are simply
too weak. They almost do no dmg at all and to have them on
offense or not, doesn’t make any difference to current OP
meta. I also have Zagrog and Arfanias and they look ok. Oh
and Devana. Weak on attack, but have nice perks if mixed with
a good team.
And it make sense SG will give me shitty heroes, because only
one I have from s4 is pt nemo and from Clash of Knights it’s
Esme. Can’t wait to pull Salmon to be my only S3 legendary..
They did it because I complained I wasn’t getting anything
(not even S1) for ages…

Finished Valhalla hard today and I went for summons immediately. No Salmon for me today, thanks! Pulled C.Skadi on first summon.

I got him on July 1 with a single pull that netted Valen. Not sure which of the 2 is the better blue hero and the jury is still out. Then I got him again on July 3 with a single pull that gave me Grimm. Ouch! I will keep 1 copy and hope for a buff down the road but any dups are Soul Exchange fodder next event. Can’t understand why SGG would release such an obviously weak hero as even the beta testers were disappointed it went out like this with only a minor change.
I was waiting with some of my EHT pulls for Kalevala in July since i was already lucky enough to get Arfanias. Now I am pretty unsure if I should do them or not. I allready got Morel, Sobek and Magni in line for scopes. (Was very lucky to pull those) I am honestly debatig on waiting with my pulls for Christmas, since i dont need another blue hero, especially if he is Klaern. His looks might not be bad, but he´s not quite my type 😉

I love that this hotm got a meek rating and i got 2 of him in less than 2 weeks. I have had decent luck since i started playing this game in febuary having gotten all but aprils hotm (the nature one) and i use iris and kara. Because of kara im sitting in platinum at lvl 35 with no heros over 700 yet she and her team wins so many enemy raids

Probably just a coincidence, but at least three people in my alliance found this guy skulking in their costume closet. I did 3 pulls from my saved up costume keys, netted nobody of value, but end up with 2 Of this blue schmoo….
Oh well, save them for the next soul exchange I suppose. 🙂
Bahahaha hilarious post. Came here straight after getting Klaern in a bonus draw with Berden this morning. Sounds like I should be happier about getting Berden.
This HotM is a piece of sh…t. Though according to my principle, which is keep at least one of each hero and ascend up to tiers 2 for 5* and tiers 3 for 4* and 3*, I am currently ascending him, hoping he we strongly be buffed.
