Soul Exchange (Empires and Puzzles) May 2022
The Empires and Puzzles Soul Exchange has just swung around again, and despite it being a busy day (New HotM), I wanted to put something together to mark the occasion.

Giving up 10, 15, or 20 heroes in exchange for 1, is always gonna be a big decision, so please get more opinions!
There’s a lot to consider, including your current roster.
For example, you might not have a solid 5-Star Fire hero but already have a solid 5-Star Ice hero. So, it might make more sense for you to exchange for the element you’re weak in than to double your already strong Ice range.
There’s also the real danger of overstretching for that top-tier hero, and completely depleting your reserves.
Finally, I’m not judging your picks, we’re just talking here. There’s no wrong or right, so please don’t walk away feeling like you’ve picked the wrong one.
Also, I don’t mind folk disagreeing with me. That’s the whole point, to get views from all sides.

Empires and Puzzles Soul Exchange May 2022
Here are the 15 heroes up for grabs in the May 2022 Soul Exchange:
Let’s go through the tiers, and I’ll offer my personal opinion on the best heroes from each.
Please note: My opinions are off the cuff and without any research (which I would normally do for my other reviews).
Tier One (10 Heroes) – Soul Exchange, Empires and Puzzles May 2022
Here are the heroes offered in exchange for 10 of your legendary heroes:
- Kunchen
- Norns
- Elradir
- Khagan
- Perseus
Here’s how I’d rate them:
#1. Kunchen (Soul Exchange Heroes)
Kunchen is my top pick here because he heals for a fantastic 42%, inflicts Defense-down on all enemies for -34%, and cleanses all allies.
On top of that, he provides +46% Defense for all Dark heroes.
His Cons? -He’s Slow.
#2. Norns (Empires and Puzzles)
Norns is next because she’s a great hero for completing Stages. Her odd element switching trick can be really useful, once in a while.
#3. Perseus (Soul Exchange Heroes)
Perseus is so old… a 2017 hero. Surely, when levelled up he looks like a new 4-Star? That aside, I like the -100% decreased healing for 4 turns, -which can’t be cleansed. Great for finishing off a stubborn healer, or a hero harbouring a healer.
He also has a great +94% defense against Nature (Titan anyone?) and a +10% increase in Mana generation for all Ice.
I wouldn’t sell my neighbour’s cat for any of these heroes today. But a year or so ago, Kunchen was a real player.
Tier Two (15 Heroes) – Empires and Puzzles Soul Exchange May 2022
Here are the heroes offered in exchange for 15 of your legendary heroes:
- Grimble
- Devana
- Lady Of The Lake
- Anzogh
- Ariel
#1. Ariel (Soul Exchange Heroes)
Ariel still has an argument to be considered one of the best healers in the game. At this stage, she’d lose that argument, but she’s still a powerhouse.
On an Average charge, she’ll heal for 40%, increase mana generation by 24%, and cleanse all allies. Pretty bad-ass.
Now, as a prime example of what I was talking about earlier, regarding how you should select the best hero for your roster, I did the same.
You see, I took part in the Soul Exchange and only had enough for a Tier-2 hero.
As I already have Azmia, and in a very recent bit of luck, managed to secure the services of Morel, plus I also have Alexandrine on the bench, it didn’t make any sense for me to pick Ariel.
However, I did have a spot for a Nature hero. And, there’s a Nature hero on this list who I happen to really like, and who I thought would form a really nice synergy with the rest of my Defense Team…
#2. Lady Of The Lake (Empires and Puzzles)
I’ve already reviewed Lady of the Lake, sharing the reasons why I like her so much.
It’s her speed and weak minions that let her down. Of course, I hope to mitigate those issues!
I still rate Ariel above her for sheer use. Ariel offers a lot for Average, while LotL is Slow.
Also, Bera’s a nightmare for the good Lady.
Still, I’m over the moon to finally have her.
#3. Devana or Grimble (Soul Exchange Heroes)
Devana’s a superstar. If you’ve read my blog, you’ll know she’s one of my best heroes.
But, in the current Meta, Grimble offers a great solution for all the modern Superpowers we face.
I know people have their own ways of dealing with minions, but Grimble could be the right hero for you.
I happen to have Costumed Gormek, and he’s my second option… My first option?
Devana.
Generally speaking, if she can get out in front of a summoner, her anti-minion minion, will do a decent job of managing them.
Hero for Hero – I rate Devana more highly than Grimble. But he has to be part of this conversation, especially in the current meta.
Tier Three (20 Heroes) – Soul Exchange, Empires and Puzzles May 2022
Here are the heroes offered in exchange for 20 of your legendary heroes:
- Lepiota*
- Sif
- Mother North
- Black Knight
- Lord Loki
*Before I deal with the rest, I have to point out that Lepiota is a rare hero who dispels Stacks from a target. -She might become really useful in future (if not already).
Oh, and let me add. This is a great group of heroes to choose from.
#1. Mother North (Soul Exchange Heroes)
I’m gonna keep this sort, I rate Mother North as the best hero in the game (that doesn’t make her the best, it’s just my opinion).
Anyway, I have her review here and have her on my Top 10 Heroes List here (which is already slightly dated!).
Mother North is so good, that I nearly killed off some of my fully levelled heroes in order to make the 20 heroes needed to get her.
Not a good idea, -it would have completely destroyed my already limited roster.
That said, she’s not the most fun hero on this list…
#2. Lord Loki (Empires and Puzzles)
Lord Loki looks like so much fun for Raiding.
Even though I wanted MN, I kept looking at his Special and thinking about all the fun we’d have together.
If you don’t know, Lord Loki copies the target’s Special and will then use it as if it were his own… Badassery to the highest degree.
#3. Black Knight (Soul Exchange Heroes)
Black Knight is a great Taunter, although not my favourite. He’s a Fire hero, making room for all the other Dark OP options out there, and he buffs his allies with +45% attack, increasing by +20% every time they’re hit.
Sif was great and her Beta Costume looks awesome, but for me, it was easy to pick these heroes over her.
Empires & Puzzles Soul Exchange
I really enjoyed seeing all the great heroes on offer this time around, in the Soul Exchange. And it was great to get hold of a hero who really improves my roster.

Hey Stein, yes I got LotL and I’m very happy. MN was too far a stretch for me and I didn’t want to wait for a later Soul Exchange.
I already had most of these except Norns, Anzogh, Sif and Perseus. I had 64 duplicates (mostly TC20 S1s and HotMs), needed roster space and was weakest in yellow defensively so I exchanged for Sif. What I really need is a 5* Red healer but none were offered today. Summer Solstice is coming so perhaps Garnet will be a lucky pull. You never know. But, at least, these dups can be used for something other than food.
Hey Dave! Wow, 64 Dups, you defo needed space. Congrats on Sif! I’m glad to have made some room myself and look forward to levelling. Good luck with Garnet, got my fingers crossed!
You do a great job with these reviews. Thank you! I took Loki. I am very weak in blues and he seems to a hero that will really help. Would he be any good on Titans? He seems Tobe built for raids and Wars. Again, Thank You!
Thanks Terry. Yes, he’ll be a decent Titan hero, adding numbers to the team damage, but on the whole, he is a dream for Raiding. Congrats!
I don’t have a yellow dispeller. I decided to take a run at c. Roc, then Devana showed up on the SE. I think you have both, how do they compare?
Tough choice, I play both. I see C.Roc as a Deity, a top end hero, where Devana is a true Archangel. That -44% Defense at Ave can make quick work of an opposition. So me personally? C. Roc.
I’m not surprised. I love my Devana, but cRoc does seem like a beast of a hero. I pulled vanilla Roc last year and still have him at 3/70 since his skill set just isn’t that appealing. After pulling Kara, I’ve been saving my EHTs. Part of me wants to keep saving them for the Halloween or Christmas heroes, but pulling that costume and suddenly having cRoc twice … Still, those are some very, very long odds.
I have zero telescope and a lot of mats for other elements. But I still picked Loki. Lol
Looks like I’ll be lurking around for Frostmarch and any reasonable offers that have telescope.
With Loki, there’s a lot of way you can use him. He sux at defense but owh boy he excels at offense. You got him, you got the best hero your opponent have.
Very nice job as always. It was a very interesting Soul Exchange this time, with a lot of very good heroes.
I’ve chosen Black Knight, since my only 5* taunters are Kara (3/70 because next darts will go to Peñolite) and Queen of Hearts… I was waiting for him since a very very long time ! And I already own every heroes in the third tier of this Soul Exchange + Lady of the Lake. In my case, it was an easy decision to make !
I chose Lepiota out of this bunch. She is a beast for offensive purposes. I currently own 10 out of this bunch already, and have them leveled. Kunchen was tempting also, but, I already have 3 Dark slow heroes he would have to wait behind for mats. For the Soul Exchange, this is the best bunch of heroes so far! Hopefully, they keep this level of heroes to choose from in the next exchange opportunity!
This Soul Exchange was an absolute personal nightmare. There were at least 3 heroes I wanted for so long. I chose Black Knight, but didn‘t have Lord Loki and Lepiota either. I’m missing on Lady of the Lake and Grimble, too… This was a tough decision… This was really a nice selection of strong heroes!

I’m waiting to see who my Academy spits out later today. After that, I’m going to sacrifice 4-5 of the maxed standard 5*s I never use to exchange for Loki. A lot of votes for Mother and BK as well, but I was lucky enough to pull Kara this month, I already have Mother twice, and Loki just seems like so much fun.
Since this exchange is gonna cut into my maxed roster, I’ll almost certainly be sitting the next one out. So yeah, a shame if that one ends up featuring the likes of Liz, Frigg or Alfrike, but at least the Trickster will let me cast their specials when I face them.
I really enjoy reading your reviews and like yourself was ready to give up some fully leveled 5 stars for Mother North. Do you the frequency of the Soul Exchange? Is it every 3 months or do we just wait and see when it’s on the calendar?

So many new purple healers out but i still choose kunchen. Needed 1 now and already have mn, lotl, bk lepiota and others so he filled a void for me. Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for validating my choice. I picked MN since I wasn’t confident I’d get her for Christmas despite stockpiling 70 epic hero tokens (and counting) just for Christmas. I was a little crestfallen that I could only do the SE once, since I had enough for LOTL. I’d been eyeing her for awhile and never lucky enough to get her, now it’s so much harder since they’ve lumped all those summons together into one mega event. She’s have paired nicely with my maxed out Ludwig (like you wrote before in a prior review). So even though bittersweet that I probably never will pull LOTL I’d have to say I’m happy with MN. Now I just hope to get her costume when Christmas rolls around! Finally- want to share my appreciation for your reviews, I do really trust your judgment, thanks for taking the time to do this!

Great content as always. Your take is always so incredibly helpful. I agonized over this decision and ultimately went with MN. Of the 15, I have 2 (Lepiota & C.Khagan).
I’ve wanted BK since I started playing but just pulled several of Kara (kept 3 after the exchange). LoLo was super tempting as well with that special, but I already have a deep blue roster with Pengi (LB), C.Lepus (maxed), Cobalt (3.70), Quintin (3.70), plus C.Finley, Skadi & Morel in the queue (Morel I just pulled & is my current blue project). Ariel is another one I’ve always wanted and would complement my blue fire power quite well (I do have Raffaele untouched on my bench to fill that healer need though if I decide to go there).
I have the tonic & the need for more green 5* heroes to go with C.Francine, Guan Yu & Conga (which also made LotL & that mana control very tempting). Plus with everything I’ve invested in Pengi, pairing him with MN makes him even stronger. I also noticed some top defenses have MN teamed with Prof. L, who is my current yellow project.
Though, despite having Gramps & Anton, I haven’t used revivers yet. It will be a change in play style for me and I’m excited to try something new!
I went into my sack of spoils to see how far i could take whomever i picked to trade for.
Seeing i had 3200+ unused Barbarian class tokens/ full set of red Ethers and an abundance of rings it had to be Black Knight eventhough the deal didnt include any costume.
With BK’s skillset i could get a second/third red mono team going wich will be good in upcoming W3K and such.
